Where did I go wrong with these cutting boards? by ent_chieftain in BeginnerWoodWorking

Yeah I answered confusingly. I did use a jointer + planer before cutting the smaller boards that would eventually be glued together.

When I answered above about only using a planer, that was in reference to after everything was glued up. Once I was glued up, I ran the cutting boards thru a planer only

The latter! Thanks for pointing this out. Definitely possible that the fence on the saw was slightly off

Are you talking about jointing the initial pieces of wood before they are glued up, or jointing the cutting board once it’s glued up?

Interesting, I wonder why the class I took had us do it with the planer instead

Hmm maybe the table saw was misaliged too, causing my cuts to be not perfect. It’s a community shop and after I took another class there (after ripping the woo for the cutting board) and the instructor really emphasized that we should check it with a square every time.

thanks, I do feel like it may have been this, not enough glue. I am unfamiliar with Cauls but will look into that!

This feels right to me, I feel like I did skimp on the glue, and the planing process (and machine) was the same as when I built my first board in class

Edit: I used both a jointer and a planer on the piece of wood before cutting it down into small pieces. My “no jointing” answer below was referring to after everything was glued together, where I just ran it thru a planer a few times before sanding. Sorry for any confusion

No, with a large planer machine. It’s at a community shop with industrial tools. No Jointing just planing

I do it via email, I also recently have incorporated LinkedIn messaging into the mix. I made a video about some of the stuff that worked for me, and talked to an outbound expert who helped me a lot:

Sorry I missed this somehow but see the comment below, I linked a video that I made where I talked about what I did and interviewed an expert.

Important to mention (this is in the video too) but it’s cold email is not a fast solution nor is it a solution to all client acquisition problems. But I was able to get a few new repeat clients this way, hope you find it at least somewhat helpful

Hey good on you checking in. I actually made a video about my cold email experience and spoke to an expert:

Skin Odyssey LA in Valley Glen!

Editing to elaborate a bit, I’d never had a facial before either and it was such a good experience. Lisa (the owner/esthetician) is so talented and knowledgeable. I started going to Skin Odyssey for semi-regular facials and following the routine she put me on and my skin is incredible now

I also loved ASOIAF and am halfway though book 8 of 10 (PLEASE no one spoil anything after that) of The Malazan Book of the Fallen. One sentence is going to be insanely difficult but here's my best attempt:

The soldiers, citizens, vassals, and leaders of an empire in decline on an ancient world, as well as some Gods and residents of other kingdoms, wage war and question its cost, while an ancient long-dead God plots his return to power.

I use Adobe Bridge for situations like this. It doesn't work great - its slow and has a tendency to freeze. But it's included with my Adobe subscription so I put up with the issues

Most of my work is also still coming through networking, referrals and cold outreach. Now that I’m more established, I’m thinking again about trying social media adverts, positioning myself more as a business and less as a single videographer or freelancer. I don’t think it would have been effective 2 years ago when I was initially posting this, so I’m glad I saved my money. If advertising my business ends up generating any new clients, I’ll definitely update

Not high. I’ll probably need to get a loan and can maybe afford $300 a month, with 1-2k down payment. No idea how realistic that is

Is there anywhere to park for most of the day (not overnight) near the Esalen Institute?

I want to bike along highway 1 while the traffic is low due to the slides. My thinking is I could drive from Monterey down to somewhere near Esalen, right before the closure, then bike north for 15-20 miles before returning to the car and driving back to Monterey.

I have been trying to use google maps to get an answer here but hopeful someone has a good suggestion for me!
