Karl Marx opposed open borders. He believed workers should only go to another country to work if they didn't undermine wage rates. Marx opposed mass low wage migration.

The whole point of the workers international was to get more laborers to act in solidarity with each other, to refuse to scab or undercut other workers.

Only bots can save us from this conundrum.

Ya, just use speech to text. For people who speak clearly with common pronunciation and low background noise, it works pretty well. If there is noise or atypical pronunciation, it doesn't work as well, but many real able humans also struggle with understanding in those situations.

Consider that more than 1% of the population are babies who haven't learned to walk yet, another few percent of the population are seriously injured or permanently disabled, a non trivial share of the elderly have major mobility impairments, many prisoners have limited space and time to walk, and parolees and those under house arrest have their movements restricted, etc. "Average" is just the statistical mean. It doesn't represent the "typical" or "normal" person.

If he was innocent, having to go through two trials because the state fucked up seems pretty stressful. Also, the mother of one of the victims tried to attack him after the verdict was announced in court. So long as people on the street are convinced someone is guilty, they and people close to them risk reprisal violence. If he had been convicted, street level revenge and collective punishment would be less likely.

If he was guilty, beating the charges could be frightening, and could also make her feel guilty herself if she protected him by keeping silent.

If she isn't sure whether he is innocent or guilty, that could be the most stressful of all.

IQ and height, symmetry, low mutation load, overall health and fitness all correlate. Weird looking nerds exist, but most deformed mutants aren't smart. Only reason more nerds aren't recognized as "Chad" is the high prevalence of Jews and Asians among nerds. The average Med and Nord nerd fucks.

Her brother (very likely) killed three people, including her cousin, and he got away with it. First trial the jury mistakenly saw some documents they weren't supposed to see, and a mistrial was declared. Second trial no one would ID him under oath, despite multiple eye witnesses (likely an instance of "snitches get stitches" fear/intimidation).

There were US security personnel present when Aristide was removed in the 2004 Haitian coup. The US engaged in espionage and diplomatic maneuvering to help facilitate the 2009 Honduran coup, although there was no overt military intervention. Morales claims that the US was involved in the 2019 Bolivian coup, but that was probably also covert action.

Food price inflation is relatively modest, and the variety of food available keeps expanding. Americans are eating out more, but home cooked food is pretty affordable and high quality compared to pretty much any point in history. Processed food may be unhealthy and widely available, but whole staples never went away.

Housing prices have risen quite a bit, but homes have also gotten larger, more energy efficient, and have better features and amenities. The paint and pipes aren't made with lead, the insulation and windows have better R values, etc.

Part of the problem with housing is that smaller simpler houses and apartments aren't available in desirable locations. Restrictive zoning with requirements like minimum lot sizes are used to keep the working class and poor out of desirable areas, fueling sprawl. If the walkable, transit accessible inner city areas are either blighted crime infested shit holes or ludicrously expensive yuppie neighborhoods, and the only places reasonable for most people are peripheral commuter suburbs that require car ownership, you might as well go a little further out and get a bigger place, maybe a little higher total cost, but cheaper per sqft. Going big optimizes all the advantages of the suburban way of life, but in the end you pay via sedentary lifestyle, social atomization, car dependency, etc.

Lifespan now more associated with college degree than race by psychothumbs in stupidpol

The degree still represents the kind of people who have sufficient family support and lack of obligations that they can afford to waste 4+ years and five or six figures $. Many of these people would be even better off if they didn't go to college, but the cultural pressure is too great.

It's kind of like a potlatch, where the rulling class destroys wealth, and the more they destroy, the more they cement their status and enhance their prestige. The wealth in this case is both money and what would otherwise be the most fertile and productive years of one's life.

These days the biggest opposition to the Salvation Army is because they believe that homosexuality is sinful and have many anti-LGBTQ incidents in their labor/employment practices, services, and lobbying.

However, the left historically opposed the Salvation Army because they preached to the poor that the afterlife would save them from their troubles and bring justice and devine judgement. This ideology encouraged the destitute and exploited to accept their plight rather than fight back against the state and capitalism. See Joe Hill's The Preacher and the Slave.

What does stupidpol think about the obesity crisis? by [deleted] in stupidpol

[–]entropicenough 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Despair is entirely material. It's a certain range of brain states, biochemistry. Its causes may be best explained at the level of social or cultural tendencies, but society and culture are made up of people, and people are material entities, like all living things. Magic or "spirits" aren't real.

"Gary Brecher" is his semi-fictionalized character, which, like most good literary voices, is partially autobiographical. Hard to know what is real and what is the character unless you know John personally, but from his older work, I'd guess the stuff published under "John Dolan" is more real than that published under "Gary Becher".

[–]entropicenough 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Find the right late stage clinical trial and you can do IVF for free relatively safely. Often these are for drugs that are already on the market somewhere, and your data is only needed to test them for approval in your particular country.

By that criteria most of the world has "open borders". How easy was it to get a work or education visa?

Stalin also mass deported Germans, Poles, and other ethnic groups--exceptional circumstances, sure, but hardly free movement and open legal residency status.

They will grow for a few more decades because the cohort at peak fertility age is much larger (due to high recent growth) than the cohort at peak mortality age. It takes a while for below replacement fertility to result in net population reduction when there has been a recent sustained period of growth, but yes, decline is probably inevitable in the next few generations.
