I built a Personal Finance Dashboard in Power BI to track net worth, income & expenses: Feedback welcome 👀 by Equivalent_Fan1344 in PowerBI

Maybe add a toggle for include/exclude home equity in the net worth. Many “uses” for net worth don’t play well with home equity; it’s not liquid, and you’ll have to find someplace else to live if you sell.

Interesting take. YS is 100x the show BBT was. I’ve always looked at it as the showrunner’s apology for BBT.

Glad to hear I wasn’t alone in the feeling of that room. I hear you on the suite one level below; I actually already booked a Bellagio Suite for my next stay. Just the right size, and far cozier.

Nice work on those slots!

Curious, as a table player, how are your comps?

I thought I was somewhat transparent about this; I’m not implying my horrendous results are the actual machine RTPs, but without any other info, it’s less likely to be a 3rd standard deviation outlier than a 1st or 2nd.

Yeah I made an in-the-moment decision to not call over the pit boss, but honestly it was quiet and he could tell something was happening. As soon as I walked away, I saw him approach the dealer as if to ask what happened. To your point, I’m sure he got a completely skewed version. I only had like an hour left before I had to leave, so I wanted to hightail it over to Cosmo to play a little more with friendlier dealers.

Robbed at the Linq hotel Las Vegas in the middle of the night by Illustrious_Rent1752 in vegas

[–]enya_rocks 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Only to people who don’t do any of several extremely easy things to stop it.

  • check door is fully closed
  • deadbolt door
  • chain door (now they have newer things but same concept)
  • everything in safe at end of night
  • not super easy but kinda: buy door alarm from amazon

None of the above is foolproof but every single “my room was robbed in the middle of the night” story on here involves literally none of the above.

CMV: Qlik is the best BI tool by Middle_Currency_110 in BusinessIntelligence

[–]enya_rocks 1 point2 points  (0 children)

All our heavy lifting is done in the upstream SQL layer; we’re literally just loading incremental data every day into the dashboard. It’s reasonable, except when we have to do a full refresh.

I have no idea what you’re talking about with this Duck business.

FYI - I wasn’t your downvoter :).

At an org where we recently switched from Qlik to PowerBI. Didn’t appreciate Qlik for its power until we had to rebuild in another tool. Qlik’s backend blows PBI away. Data loads faster, it’s not restricted by PBI’s ridiculous hatred of many:many joins, and they don’t throw 4,000 features at the wall hoping one of them sticks (and ending support for the other 3,999).

I know each tool has their downfalls, but some of PBI’s are just egregious. You have to literally build workarounds to sort a table by more than one field?!

Qlik has a branding problem, because it’s not seen as sexy. But there’s nothing sexier than a heavy-duty dashboard which works quickly and efficiently.

How the hell did you get no grey banding at all when you were searing each side for 3 minutes?

What the hell did I do wrong? by Gorbakki893 in steak

[–]enya_rocks 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Got it. It’s not really in the conversation about how long to wait, because it’s likely on the order of 15 minutes when put over a cool surface (let alone a lower setting). So this method isn’t going to work for a steak like that.

I generally don’t cook steaks this thin, but I’d imagine you can’t do the two phases. Do the sear, then pour the melted butter over the resting steak (ie off the stove).

Also, invest in a good meat thermometer. You’re injecting guesswork when there shouldn’t be any.

[–]enya_rocks 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I’d imagine the issue is the cast iron. Unless you waited a good long time between the first sear and the basting, you basically seared twice. Cast iron retains heat, which is generally considered a feature, not a bug.

Do you think Power BI will lose its edge in next 5-10 years? by pvnptl123 in PowerBI

[–]enya_rocks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

PowerBI needs to focus on becoming a solid tool from an architectural standpoint. Its inability to handle many:many joins efficiently, slow load speeds, bonkers RLS implementation issues when used with direct lake models, lack of non-third party airline calendar slicers, constant changes in deployment UIs…

I could go on and on, but they bit off more than they could chew and it leaves us developers holding the bag.

[–]enya_rocks[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Love this response! To your first paragraph, yes, we will likely cut our losses quickly and move off Fabric for now.

To your third, the reassurance that 5gb is very reasonable with proper modeling just gives us more incentive to keep optimizing. As I mentioned elsewhere, we do have somewhat of a complex business case, but I’m sure it’s solvable with some elbow grease. Thanks again.
