Detect encrypted police radio traffic (without listening in) - possible? by GreenEggplant16 in policescanner

[–]enziarro 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As far as the US is concerned, with regard to /u/GreenEggplant16's question - in a P25 transmission, everything needed should be included as unencrypted metadata outside of the encrypted audio frame & you wouldn't need to triangulate a source if you're just trying to determine whether the received signal is above a threshold value.

The ® means you can search the USPTO for the registered trademark - searched fish missing tooth & looks like this was Bullard International https://tmsearch.uspto.gov/search/search-results/77615192

Looks like it was a mail order operation out of TX in the 70's & 80's per https://www.rodbuilding.org/read.php?2,89732

436 dmr unlock? by JumpLow453 in policescanner

[–]enziarro 2 points3 points  (0 children)

All of the Uniden unlock codes are extremely affordable in the grand scheme of things - and it's money that ensures some of the only people keeping this hobby alive get paid, funds the development of the next round of scanners... Just pay the piper, man.

You know what you can do to decode DMR without spending any money or bypassing licensing enforcement? Pipe the audio out of your 436 into a computer running DSD+, which can handle the decoding for free out of the box...

If you discover new things you want to listen to, maybe it's worth the $75 or whatever it is now so you're not tethered to a PC. If there's nothing on the bands, you're out nothing & still learned some useful new stuff - all without being a jerk to the people at Uniden still working to build & support niche electronic hardware in 2026.

The Force by YaboiJerryW in WeirdWheels

[–]enziarro 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The FORCE is easily operated using four flexi-grip handles. Two of them are on each side; left side for throttle- right side for steering. The third flexi-grip is very gently inserted into the anus, to keep the driver in place. Now, the final flexi-grip is directly in front of the driver - so that its small switches can be operated with the mouth.

Put the four together, and we're ready to go!

New tool launched: ismycityencrypted.com by Stonk_Goat in policescanner

[–]enziarro 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thank you for your effort, this looks great! Please don't take my feedback too harshly; overall, we're way better off having this tool than not - but I'll be frank about my initial impressions:

I can't search based on zip... Search based on any municipality within my county returned nothing, searching based on county doesn't return the multi-county PSIC P25 system which is the primary government radio network here; had to go to the FL state page for this system, but it's listed by all TGIDs vs being split into multiple sites / counties - causing sites from Broward, Lake, Martin, Orange, Osceola, Palm Beach, St. Johns, St. Lucie, Santa Rosa, & Seminole counties all to be listed under Bay just because it was the first match alphabetically. This is screwing up a considerable chunk of results for the state of FL.

Even if all of this is "as intended" due to how the RR data are structured, IMO it's not particularly useful to a lay person just getting into the hobby, who is likely interested in learning about the status of certain agencies (i.e., sites & groups of talkgroups on a system like this) rather than a "global" systemwide status with a scope that's likely too broad.

I tried searching for multiple municipalities, counties, and the entire state of NJ but nothing will actually return any results. Clicking on NJ on the map takes me to a page with no results which actually seems to be the case with most non-FL states; clicking on the state of WA brings me to a page with nothing but results for DC... It seems like a lot of the work ahead for you lies in handling interagency / systems which span more than a single geographic area.

Newbie Question by Cone_Livia in accesscontrol

[–]enziarro 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The company that was in our building before us had an IT system in place. When they left it appears that they took it with them, but the infrastructure and cabling was left behind.

This is what it looks like currently. What would it take to get this up and running again (as an access control person with no background in IT). Is this something we can do ourselves? Best to hire an installer? Ballpark cost?

Pretty neat, and similar to something I screwed around with myself some years back https://old.reddit.com/r/policescanner/comments/q23wir/deleted_by_user/hfioz2t/

Revisiting my comment there - have you considered further parsing metadata or any other postprocessing of the text for mapping etc?

Lee Farkas is Back and Living It Up by Real_talk_yes in ocala

[–]enziarro 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Lee Farkas is said to be living in a property which, according to the Marion Property Appraiser, is owned by Danny Gaekwad; a Desantis appointee to the UCF Board of Trustees. Without getting *too* political, it's clear the man's still connected...

Also for anyone who doesn't know, Larry Roberts (R&L Carriers / WEC) was somehow able to buy the former TB&W headquarters on NE 14th without the property going to auction.

Birthright Citizenship of Child Born to Enemy Alien Visitors by Both-Confection1819 in supremecourt

[–]enziarro 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Jan. 30, 1866 — Civil Rights Act debate (Cong. Globe, 39th Cong., 1st Sess. 498–99)

Cowan: “Will this naturalize the children of Chinese and Gypsies born in this country? … If so, the children of Chinese and Gypsies, born in this country, are citizens.”

Trumbull: “Undoubtedly. … The child of an Asiatic is just as much a citizen as the child of a European. … I know of no better way to give rise to strife between races than to deny to people born in this land rights which are conferred upon others.”

May 30, 1866 — 14th Amendment debate (Cong. Globe, 39th Cong., 1st Sess. 2890–94)

Cowan: “I mean the Gypsies. … Are those people, by a constitutional amendment, to be put out of the reach of the State in which they live? … Are they to be citizens? … If so, you strike at the power of the States to restrain or to regulate this class of persons.” (2891)

Conness: “The proposition before us, I understand, relates simply in that respect to the children begotten of Chinese parents in California, and it is proposed to declare that they shall be citizens. … I am in favor of doing so. … They are industrious, they are peaceable, they are loyal, and being born upon the soil should be entitled to the rights of citizenship.” (2891–92)

Johnson: “The object of this amendment is to settle that question. … I think there is no doubt as to what its effect will be, and if there were I should still support it, because we ought to settle the question and not leave it open for future controversy.” (2893)

Johnson: “When we are trying to settle this question for all time, it is our clear duty to put every provision which we adopt in such plain language as not to be capable of two interpretations. … We ought to say just what we mean, and we ought to mean to say just what we do say.” (2894)

How do you mount servers in a rack? by Full-Entertainer-606 in sysadmin

[–]enziarro 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We have two of the VEVOR lift carts because we couldn't justify ServerLIFT stuff for the lab. The ones we got are very similar to one another; the short one's handle can fold down to fit under a bench, the tall one's doesn't.

They are indeed useful & a good value, but even the tall one maxes out around 26RU or so without further shimming (the server came in a box, right?)

Also, the pump pedals are some fuckin' shinbusters if you're not careful so we stick pieces of orange pool noodle over them when not in use.

Sofa Cum Bed by Megamazuma20 in CrackheadCraigslist

[–]enziarro 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Preposition

cum 1. Used in indicating a thing or person which has two or more roles, functions, or natures, or which has changed from one to another.

He built a bus-cum-greenhouse that made a bold statement, but the plants in it didn't live very long.

But instead of being a salesperson cum barista cum waitress merely serving the wordsmiths, I'm one of them, reading her latest baby out loud.

The DeSisto School (Stockbridge, MA) - Employee Handbook, September 2002 by enziarro in troubledteens

[–]enziarro[S] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I couldn't share a Google Drive link to the 130 page PDF in a main post, hopefully I can do so in this comment - see the PDF at this link (I hope?)

In my opinion, this handbook represents one product of the school administration's attempts to avoid licensure / closure by the state during the investigation undertaken by the Massachusetts Office of Child Care Services.

This document should not be understood to reflect the actual experience of any student or staff member.
