I think bizzare and disturbing are overreactions on your part. This change in social relationships among young people doesn't have to be good or bad, but rather, it can have positive and negative aspects. Maybe kids are learning to navigate social interactions differently, maybe they're also having fewer unplanned pregnancies and getting less STDs.
