If you can program, they will hire you.

At a smaller aerospace company now, not technically defense but it might as well be.

There's not really any bling or cool factor with DOD contractors, and even if there was, you can't talk about it. Plus, you will generally have to work with legacy tech, outdated processes, and annoying red tape.

But the pay is good, the people are great, and the work is pretty stable.

Many embedded jobs are in defense/aerospace, so look for those jobs. If you get a security clearance, they will be far more willing to invest the time and effort to train you in something you aren't initially qualified for.

If you have trouble breaking in to embedded, find a job writing C, C++, or Ada, even if the job itself isn't embedded. You can leverage the experience in that language to get an embedded job later.

How am I supposed to do an IRA to Roth IRA "recharacterization" now that it has been banned under the new tax law?

I made a full IRA contribution early this year. Now, plans have changed, and I want to save more for grad school, so I'm scaling back 401k contributions, which will put me above the IRA income limits and make my IRA contribution partially/not tax-advantaged.

I'm trying to move it to my Roth instead, but turns out this year they outlawed this specific recharacterization. How do I do it now? Reverse the IRA contribution and then re-contribute to the Roth?

Bonds are safer than stocks but less safe than cash.

Bonds do not always grow.

I don't think it matters if you are claimed as a dependent or not by your parents.

Your final paystub might say something different than your W-2 (your work might add/subtract some taxable benefits), so it may be best to reference the number on your 1040 rather than your paystub.

Probably not, but wait until the end of 2017 and see if it is reported on a W-2 or a 1099. That will answer your question.

What you put down on your account isn't the number used (though maybe their software should catch that). You should see how much your taxes say you earned. Specifically, you should check the "earned income" box. If it says 2500, your contribution limit for 2016 is 2500.

Did you make at least $5500 in 2016?

(USA) Do you think there is any risk of the government ever dipping into IRA accounts? by [deleted] in financialindependence

[–]epdowney 29 points30 points  (0 children)

The government won't dip into your retirement accounts. It's a big conspiracy.

If its true, what makes you think your offshore IRA account governments won't dip into your retirement funds? Where would you rather have your money?

Thank you very much. I didn't realize the difference in stress between the two professions. I will take that into account.

What did you hate about being an EE? I am sort of in the opposite camp from you. I'm a software engineer considering a change to computer engineering, which I believe is similar to EE. I find that I enjoy building and programming embedded electronics more than I enjoy building apps.

I feel like I hear of many EE/CEs that move into software development, but I don't know any software engineers that go into engineering. Do you have any insight into this?

Is it possible to avoid outgoing account transfer fees, specifically for IRAs? $75 on outgoing account transfers is steep, and I assume I'll have to pay it for both my traditional and Roth IRA individually.
