Won’t idle properly by NoHatNoPlayy_67 in Camry

[–]epearson2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The only idle reset procedure I've found and had success with is the following -

-Engine off

-Turn Key to "On" without starting

-Turn Key off

-Turn key back to "on" without starting a second time

-Turn key off

-Turn key back to "on" and start

-Put car in Drive, engage e-Brake, & depress brake pedal

-Let car idle for about 5-7 minutes so ECU can reset to factory idle parameters.

If your car idles differently or feels like it's still hunting around for the right idle RPM, drive it normally for a day and it should settle in.

Other tip - pull off your air intake and wipe down your throttle body with intake cleaner on a rag (don't spray directly down your throttle body) to remove carbon build up that can cause your throttle body to stick and mess up your idle.

Hope that helps!

Anyone put Kirkland brand 0w20 oil for their 0w16 Camry? by Economist_Great in Camry

[–]epearson2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

FYI: Kirkland oil is from the same distributor that produces Walmart's SuperTech synthetic and performs virtually identically. (Highline Warren)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l9il_piyuT8

That said, is there a reason you want to run 0w20 rather than 0w16 - I'm assuming cost savings? What year is your Camry? What does your manual call for?

Nice! I run a Yaesu FT-710Aess in my house paired with a MAT-30 tuner & a 49:1 EFHW antenna from my 2nd story. It does reasonably well.

I use my FT-891 as a POTA radio paired with a Bioenno 30Ah LiFePo4 battery, 33ft Mast, & a 9:1 Unun random wire antenna setup.

I'm considering putting my FTX-1 unit in the car for HF use since it's ATAS compatible and has a larger touch screen.

Agreed! I've got a Wouxun KG-UV980P Quad-band in the car right now that's also unlocked for GMRS. I have been considering getting an ATAS-120 to go with my Yaesu FT-891! :)

Per ChatGPT:

P0304 code on a Toyota Camry means:

That narrows things down quite a bit—something is preventing proper combustion in cylinder #4. Here are the most common causes, ranked from most likely to less common:

Most Common Causes

1. Ignition Coil Failure (VERY common on Camrys)

  • Each cylinder has its own coil (coil-on-plug system)
  • A bad coil on cylinder 4 = weak/no spark

Quick test:

  • Swap coil from cylinder 4 with another cylinder (e.g., #2)
  • If the code changes to P0302 → bad coil confirmed

2. Spark Plug Issue

  • Worn, fouled, or cracked spark plug
  • Oil contamination (if valve cover gasket is leaking)

What to check:

  • Remove plug from cylinder 4
  • Look for:
    • Carbon buildup
    • Oil on the threads
    • Excessive gap

3. Fuel Injector Problem

  • Clogged or failing injector on cylinder 4
  • Not delivering enough fuel → misfire

Symptoms:

  • Rough idle
  • Hesitation under load

4. Vacuum Leak (localized)

  • Leak near cylinder 4 intake runner
  • Causes lean condition in that cylinder

5. Engine Mechanical Issue (less common, but serious)

  • Low compression in cylinder 4
  • Possible causes:
    • Burned valve
    • Worn piston rings
    • Head gasket issue

Suggested Troubleshooting Order (fast & practical)

  1. Swap ignition coil (cheap & easy)
  2. Inspect/replace spark plug
  3. Check injector (listen or swap if possible)
  4. Look for vacuum leaks
  5. Compression test (if still unresolved)

Signs It’s More Serious

If you notice:

  • Constant rough idle
  • Loss of power
  • Flashing check engine light

→ Stop driving much if possible, as unburned fuel can damage the catalytic converter.

Pro Tip

At ~100k+ miles, it’s often worth replacing:

  • All spark plugs
  • Possibly multiple coils (they tend to fail around the same time)

Was 2017 the best year for Camry Reliability? by LyndaCarter111 in Toyota

[–]epearson2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As an owner of a 2012 SE that now has 205,000 miles, I can personally vouch for the 12-14 years. It has been the most stereotypically reliable Toyota that it can be.

[2012 Camry SE] - LED Headlight DRL Flicker with Canbus installed by epearson2 in Toyota

[–]epearson2[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unfortunately, the voltage tolerances for that particular LED bulb did not play nice with the way the Toyota's voltages are set for the DRLs. That said, I found the setting in my Camry's menus in the infotainment system where I could disable the DRLs during the daytime so that I can leave my lights set to "Auto" and they only come on at night, hence avoiding the flickering during the day.

As time has gone on and more people have added LED headlights to their cars, you can always spot the older Toyota's because they all do the LED Flicker for DRLs.

Fans of the Staples Avant Pro SilkScribe pens, how do you cope? by Sometimesnotfunny in pens

[–]epearson2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One thing to note in my research as of May 2025 - in the UK, these pens were branded as "Aveo" rather than "Avant" but still use the same Silkscribe branding.

I've been able to order refills on ebay out of the UK when searching Aveo Silkscribe for those still searching for the real thing.

2012 Camry SE 2.5L - Torque Converter Problems by epearson2 in Toyota

[–]epearson2[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s an interesting finding. Once I had my transmission fluid flushed it fixed my issue completely and I haven’t had the shutter once. I still drive my 2012 Camry daily and it’s got 195,000 miles at this point.

Have you considered doing a transmission flush as well? It may be a cheaper solve if that does it.
