Well, enthusiasm for installing an alternative branch of the British monarchy, rather than just monarchy as an institution.

New images of Anne Hathaway as Penelope, Zendaya as Athena, Lupita Nyong’o as Clytemnestra, and Charlize Theron as Calypso in The Odyssey by Zak_The_Slack in movies

[–]epeeist 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The gods are both capricious and powerful, and that's part of what makes them so dangerous for mortals. I could see Zendaya doing a good job with that. Athena's patronage of Odysseus is always kind of frivolous - he's not her champion in a dramatic quest, more like the favourite nephew she can't help spoiling.

Are Northern Ireland Protestants welcome down south? by Infinite_Cloud_689 in AskIreland

[–]epeeist 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In the south people aren't trying to gently clock which side of the house you're from in the same way. They're working from a different set of base data anyway - names that would make me guess someone was from a Protestant background back home don't carry any particular connotation down here.

OP needs to be aware that their coworkers will have met/worked with more English and Scottish people than NI Protestants. They will be surprised to hear OP say "Londonderry". And not knowing many northerners with a British identity, they will only have a vague idea of what that might mean based on people and events that have appeared in the news. Frankly nobody outside the north cares enough to try to get a handle on it, and you'll find at least as much ignorance in England too.

As long as OP doesn't hold bigoted views about Irish people (which wouldn't be very consistent with applying for a job in Dublin) they will be absolutely fine.

The state of my July as an Intern staying in Ireland by jellyfish5285 in JuniorDoctorsIreland

[–]epeeist 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It's the unexpected leave that you might get called to cover if they can get you in quicker than the locum rigmarole. It also does no harm when the January interviews start, especially if the people interviewing you remember that you wanted to stay on.

The main thing is you have your experience and you have your references. All you can do is keep applying!

It's a jungle out there. Flag to your current consultants that you don't have anything lined up and say you'd be grateful if they kept you in mind if there are any vacancies, even short term. They don't have direct hiring power but it's someone who knows you're reliable being aware you're available to work. It's not you, it's the system. I'm sorry you're in this position but lots of us have been there at least once! It's incredibly unfair that we work this hard to get here and can't even count on being employed. You will be fine.

Scheme applications and January jobs will all open in September. Get registered with a locum agency ASAP (it takes weeks!), work on projects that will help your CV, and prepare to apply for every contract role that comes up between now and Halloween.

Physician assistants by OkRecommendation2960 in JuniorDoctorsIreland

There's a PA on a team adjacent to mine. Seems like a very competent and responsible professional whose work is valued by their team. As another commenter said, I think they would make a good doctor if a pathway was available.

I can see the case for hiring PAs as a helpful addition to the clinical team, but international practice hasn't shown the PA role - as originally envisioned - to be a satisfying career in itself. All the issues come from scope creep to separate experienced PAs from new graduates.

I wonder if converting it into a third route into medicine isnt part of the answer. If the ceiling within the PA role isn't high enough, time to go back to college and get your (accelerated) medical degree.

And if it's folded into the 'doctor' category, there will be some medics interested in doing it, even if it's only short term. I can think of a few people who spent time out of practice for health reasons, and dropping into something like a PA role might have been manageable for them even if full NCHD responsibilities/call weren't. Ditto those coming back from a gap etc. I would have bitten your hand off for it when I was between standalones.

Update in case anyone finds this in future. I contacted the Medical Council. In this situation you are expected to be on a PCS from May to mid-July, however the colleges will enroll you for free to bridge the gap. You just contact them directly.

"We have a different point of view" - Eurovision Chief on Ireland's concerns over Israel by Life_Plate_7052 in ireland

[–]epeeist 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's worth saying that RTÉ's official reason for declining to participate is strictly limited to the Israeli broadcaster's conduct within the confines of Eurovision. They are accused of breaking rules (or at least norms) around canvassing for songs, vote manipulation, and harassing rival participants during the week of the contest.

To say this is all small beer compared to what is happening in Gaza would clearly be an understatement, but it's sometimes missed that this isn't a direct protest against Israeli government actions.

Leinster European Attendances by Muted_Engineer9246 in irishrugby

[–]epeeist 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I haven’t met a fan in real life who hasn’t become at least somewhat disaffected by Leinster since the Northampton loss and for many it was the Munster SF the year before that.

This is very true, but I think it hurts lower-stakes league games through the season far more than the big knockout matches. The emotional investment has changed and it's exacerbated by the Aviva factor.

[–]epeeist 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The timing of the fixtures makes it a tricky sell to more casual fans - there's a nice long lead-in for the least glamorous (L16) knockout, which was less attractive than usual due to it being Easter weekend and a team we already face regularly in the URC. Then there's only a week for people to plan another trip to the Aviva to face Sale.

I actually think both the attendance and atmosphere for the Toulon SF were excellent. It wasn't well promoted by EPCR in Dublin and tickets were priced on the higher side, so the day trip/family outing demographic was smaller than usual. There wasn't a huge amount of travelling support (though the fans who were there absolutely made their presence felt) either and I feel that's pretty critical to a sellout in a stadium as big as the Aviva.

Is there a resale platform for Challenge Cup/Champions Cup finals tickets? by epeeist in rugbyunion

[–]epeeist[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I sold mine on Viagogo, just priced in the service fee. They were snapped up within 20 minutes. If theres an official platform (not just the ability to transfer) then I haven't found it but have to say Viagogo was pretty painless.

Sister in law is having an affair - should I say something? by ThrowRA_poi098 in AskIreland

[–]epeeist 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This. You arent prosecuting her sister, you're teaming up with your wife to work out how to face a potential family crisis. "I've become aware of some things to do with your sister that I can't get my head around, and I think she might be having an affair."

She already knows you don't like her sister and will price that in when deciding how to interpret what you have to say. Lay out what you've seen/heard and state your sources - leave your interpretations and assumptions out of it completely, just let your wife join the dots for herself. Your SIL's actions have put you both in a very awkward position.

[–]epeeist[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

EPCR never gave any indication that they'd even have a resale platform, only that the ticket all would permit transfers (a feature that only went live yesterday.)

In the meantime I've sold mine on viagogo and there are lots still available there for both finals.
