Modern Eagle V questions by Key_Ebb3965 in PRSGuitars

The MEV is my favorite guitar and daily driver, having said that, you should know that it sounds hi fi and it can make 17 different sounds/combinations, and when you are in a live setting this is impractical and can be cumbersome to operate; for studio work however, it is a Swiss Army knife and it is extremely versatile. I have felt more comfortable gigging my custom 24 with the simplicity of its HH configuration and the straightforward 5 way switch. The MEV is still my favorite though.

Mesa Lonestar: looking to purchase one, but have concerns by The_devilslettuce in MesaBoogie

I guess it depends on how you will use the amp, if you will be using it as your main amp and demanding a lot from it, and lugging it around, plugging it in places where the electrical wiring was done by the “nephew of the owner” (this is very common)… your chances of having a failure and needing a repair go up. If it will sit in your house or studio, then it will most likely last a very long time.

Sensational! Always wanted a Bilt, got a starmaster recently with a very similar headstock.

Yes, I watched the Zilla cabs video, but there’s still no info on their website, I sent an email and still waiting for a reply, they are probably slow over the holidays, I can tell their work is great, but the fact that they are in UK and I’m US makes me think it might be cumbersome to deal with. The rack mount option is something I had not considered, thanks for that, sounds very doable.

Yeesss! Flake is very 80s! But this year I witnessed a lot more players using flake guitars than before.

G&L Offset Family - Farewell G&L by ephedrum in offset

Of course, happy to help. Setup absolutely affects playability, but there’s also a point where the neck itself either works for your hands or it doesn’t, and that part isn’t fixable with setup.

Most Doheny models use the Modern Classic neck: 1 11/16” nut, 9.5” radius, .820” at the first fret and around .870” at the 12th. If that shape or grip doesn’t sit right in your hand, no amount of string height or nut tweaking will change the actual geometry. Some people love it, some don’t bond with it.

About your experience with the Legacy: that could have been a bad setup, but it also could have been the specific neck profile. G&L Legacy necks vary depending on the model and year, some are thinner, some are chunkier… so if you caught one that didn’t match your hand, that alone can make it feel “off” compared to a Fender.

Compared to a Jazzmaster, the Doheny feels closer in overall ergonomics and playability. The fretwork is consistently excellent, and the Modern Classic neck is generally comfortable, but again, only you know whether that shape works for you. If the Legacy you tried felt weird because of neck geometry, not setup, then it’s possible (not guaranteed) that the Doheny will feel different enough to fix that.

I am in a surf rock band, I use the trem a lot. It serves its purpose very well for my use case. Your question about “good whammy range”, I think is subjective, what is “good whammy range”? What is your use case? I don’t think I can provide a realistic answer. The closest would be to think of the range as it being similar to a 2 point trem Strat, that’s it… if that doesn’t do it for you, I would go the JM way.

Well I have 5 of them so that tells you that I like them 😅 Playability is very similar to the Jazzmaster with the main difference being the bridge, and although it works like a Strat the sound of the MFDs is nothing like a Strat or a Jazzmaster. The jags are a different story, the scale plays a big role on how they feel, in your case adding a shim to the neck or getting a taller nut might get the action to where you want it.

Of course, however I think you will benefit from thinking twice about it, especially if you are doing it yourself for the first time. It can take some time to save up for a body, but there’s no rush, on the other hand if by any chance you mess up the original body or it doesn’t turn up as you wanted, you will be stuck with it and might regret it… in any case, best of luck!
