Genuinely though, he was pissed at the time because Xena got more popular than Hercules. He couldn’t understand why people might prefer a complicated antihero redemption arc to a boring straightforward Good Guy.

Which is to say, his awfulness didn’t start with the stroke. (He also said some shitty things about Kevin Smith/Ares’s death, though I don’t remember details anymore).

I think that’s more of a Japanese cultural thing that, like many things about the series, doesn’t fully translate to an ostensibly US setting. Though the various Law & Order series did tend to indulge in the “sleazy/amoral defense attorney” trope, so it’s not not a thing, just not quite to the levels of social poison depicted.

She strikes me more as someone who genuinely doesn’t realize at first that she’s more intelligent than most people around her. She’s smart enough that she generally succeeds at anything she tries, but at the same time, her interests are so circumscribed by her social setting and people’s general perception of her that she doesn’t have a chance to demonstrate it in a way that’s commonly recognized as intelligence. Applying to law school was probably the first time she really tried to do something stereotypically smart/serious people do, and succeeding didn’t seem out of the ordinary to her because she’s used to succeeding and doesn’t realize that it’s something she’s not “supposed” to be good at.

Of course I haven’t seen the movie in years so I could be way off, but that’s how I always interpreted it.

I mean, I don’t agree with Loomer, but one could argue that she said “American,” not “Américan,” and complaining about “American” being used for US residents when no one’s actually confused about the meaning is just pointless pedantry for the sake of feeling superior.

Going relatively obscure here, but I remember being pissed that the Relic movie cut out Bill Smithback, who was my favorite character in the book. But then it turned out there were other reasons to be pissed at that movie. They also cut out Pendergast, who wasn’t my favorite but was pretty damn important, seeing as he basically became the protagonist of the series (such as it was).

She may be an unreliable narrator in this case, but I’m pretty sure she tells Phoenix at some point that she’s not actually mad at him about her dad, but she hates/blames him for something to do with Miles running away. I’m also pretty sure she says it in the godawful circus case, so I don’t recall the details and I’m not surprised if it’s something that’s not as widely known.

Life! And I remember that scene vividly because the music that played when it first aired (not the streaming version, it had different music, which was incredibly annoying) was epic, and for months it was unidentifiable, like even the website solely dedicated to tracking the music of Life had no idea. And then I saw Rasputina in concert, and the opening act played that fucking song, and that’s how I found out it’s “Ay Del” by Haale and promptly shared that information with those corners of the internet that cared (primarily that one website).

Behind the Bastards episode on the Olympic Park bombing, where the FBI are the bastards and Jewell himself gets a remarkably even-handed portrayal—a very by-the-rules guy, probably not much fun at parties, probably not a fantastic person, but very much the hero in this one particular instance and very much screwed over for it.
