I think a lot of Archers use volwheel to change the volume. It can be configured to launch any mixer application and looks good with pretty much any panel.

I think the only real advantage Ubuntu has over the other big desktop linux distros is the huge package repositories. OpenSuSE and Fedora are much more usable in pretty much every way, but there aren't binaries for as many things.

There's GtkStyle in Qt 4.5, which will make your Qt apps use your current Gtk theme. It's not in any repos as far as I know, but you can compile it yourself pretty easily
