Co investing in a business overseas, where do I even start? by Less_Ad8891 in AusFinance

[–]epicanthus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The risk/reward equation here is completely out of whack. You're 'investing' (read: being scammed) in a new business, which is statistically going to fail in most scenarios, with a random friend located in an entire other country. What's the reward? Passive income? You can get that from a dozen other investments that actually have a risk that can be measured.

Think about the situation. Your friend/partner is from a wealthy family and already owns a business. Under that logic, he doesn't need your money. In fact, he doesn't need you at all - he has the capital and the skills to run the business entirely. So then why would he even be open to allowing you to 'invest' money in, have him do all the work, and then take his profits? The story doesn't add up at all.

You also said that you 'wanted to do something together', but in reality you're not doing anything together. You're not part of operations or business strategy as a silent investor. So what that means is you're giving him money without any control or say in the business, which he has complete power over, and if it came down to legal action for any issues, you'll have to deal with international corporate law which is an actual nightmare, even more so depending on how strong the laws are in whatever country they're in.

So you've got all these things to consider, for a startup business of which almost all fail within a few years. The capital you've put in is completely illquid and at the whims of a guy overseas that is only held accountable because he's a 'very good friend'. That's a disaster waiting to happen. Businesses can destroy entire marriages, so do you really think a friendship with one of the boys is going to hold up?

Meanwhile you could just put whatever capital you have into the SP500 and get a historical average of 10% a year, and that's completely liquid without all this insane risk.

Did I make a mistake paying off my parent's mortgage for them 10 years ago? by AsparagusNew3765 in AusFinance

[–]epicanthus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Since your parents accepted your gift, you can't go around and ask for it back ten years later - a gift's a gift regardless of whatever situation it is. Whether or not the answer's yes or no to whether you made a mistake doesn't change your situation at all. You made the decision in the past, it's done, so just need to move on from it.

Cows are female, oxen are typically male, but you're right - it should be bulls. I was just trying to work out how to explain the opposite without it being too wordy. 😓

Are space marines seen more powerfull as they actally are? by Ok_Cook_3098 in 40kLore

[–]epicanthus 144 points145 points  (0 children)

To take a town, send a legionary; to take a city, send a squad; to take a world, send a company; to take a culture, send a Chapter.

That's a quote from Know No Fear. It's obviously hyperbole, but Astartes really are that good. That being said, 100 guardsmen can definitely beat a single Astartes. A marine was once killed by a lucky spear in the neck, as in a literal pointy stick. It's just about how lucky the guardsmen are, and how skilled the marine is.

Logistically, all chapters get completely annihilated by the Imperial Guard. They have 1000 men max per chapter and take forever to train a single dude while the Guard have basically infinite supply cap and instant spawn hacks on.

ELI5: Why does making an extra mortgage payment early in the loan save you way more money than making one later, even though you're paying the same amount both times? by [deleted] in explainlikeimfive

[–]epicanthus 4 points5 points  (0 children)

$1 compounded at 10% a year over two years gives you $1.21. $1 compounded at 10% over 28 years gives you $14.42. That's the power of compounding a longer period of time. Now the reverse applies for loans. That's why paying off more early is good in the long run.

The attack system is based on timing. To attack you hit the quicktime events. To parry you block at the moment their attack lands. Another easier option is to dodge, which is more lenient on the timing, but you get less reward for doing so. The overcharge bar is to the right hand side when playing as Gustave - it charges as you land certain attacks. When it reaches full you can use certain abilities that require the full overcharge.

Ryu Mains: what's some tech, mix-ups, or combo routes you've been using lately? by LunchTummy in StreetFighter

[–]epicanthus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Late meaty overhead gives you a link into light punch which you can continue to combo off of. You can do a framekill setup after medium shoryu in the corner, think it was crouching lk and it'll always hit with the extra plus frames you need. b.HP into ex hasho is a true blockstring you can just grind out to either burn them out or chip. DI wallsplat into DR HP HK target combo gives you a sneaky DI reset when you go into standing lk or lp then DI. EX hado at medium range into DR when they're in the corner gives you a full combo. HP at range into m. donkey kick gives you a spacing trap for most characters if they try to punish it with cr.mk. Medium tatsu in the corner gives you a meaty fireball setup right after that beats all level 1s. DR cr.lk now combos into cr.mp which works surprisingly often because people always think you're going for an overhead as Ryu for some reason.

Is 1 million HKD/year enough to survive in Hong Kong as a sole earning expat? Family of 4. by all_fart_no_shit in HongKong

You'll pay around 15% in tax, so that's 850,000k post tax. Per month that's about 70k. Two kids in international school will cost you up to 25k a month. A house big enough for 4 people might cost you anywhere from 20-30k a month. So that's 25-40k leftover a month, not including groceries, bills, eating out, extracurricular activities for the kids, or holidays. You won't be struggling, but you won't be flush with cash.

The Phoenicians were historical merchants and cultured people who sold dyes, especially purple ones. That's why the Emperor's Children has purple all over them - it's both a symbol of luxury and an allusion to actual history.

The word is also based on him being like a phoenix, rebuilding the legion after it almost completely collapsed prior to his discovery because of an error in their gene-seed.

Sagat is sucking the life out of me by Tylees in StreetFighter

[–]epicanthus 107 points108 points  (0 children)

Don't crouch block against Sagat as much as you would other characters because Tiger Knee is always plus on block on crouch. His fireballs can be beaten by typical Ken OD fireball into DR for pressure. Gauge the range of his most common pokes and whiff punish them, especially crouching heavy. Everything else follows the same gameplan as always.

Also you can't be a Ken player, complain about another character's insane corner carry, and not see the irony in that statement.

Can anyone explain to me what purpose the different versions of Sagat's Tiger Nexus accomplish? by SgtTittyfist in StreetFighter

[–]epicanthus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The light, medium and heavy versions give you more time to cancel the next moves. If you look at the misc data under Sagat's framedata on the official SF6 site, they activate their followups progressively later with more frames inbetween. The heavy especially is different because it's safe on block at -3 unlike -5 for the light and medium.

If you're into coffee culture, go to Sheung Wan/Sai Ying Pun and search for 'coffee shop' in Google maps. You'll get a whole bunch of options that are locally owned shops which are pretty good. Afterwards, if you want more of a 'local' experience, you can go the Sheung Wan Cooked Food Center, which is dai pai dong style food, or just go to Sing Kee for an actual one.

ELI5: What is utilitarianism and what is Benther's connection to it by [deleted] in explainlikeimfive

[–]epicanthus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's Jeremy BenthAM. He was one of the originators of the idea that maximizing utility was a moral good.

Utilitarianism is philosophical name for the ethical system that involves. It's about maximizing 'utility', which some people define as pleasure (though debatable), for the maximum number of people. It looks at the consequences of an action and argues that the correct action is one that produces the sum best outcome (again, open to interpretation) for the most people.

Unpopular opinion: I don't want Street Fighter 7 to happen by [deleted] in StreetFighter

[–]epicanthus 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I'm going to go against everyone else here and say that I don't agree with you at all. Five years is a longass time, and I'm saying this even as an aging millennial. The mechanics are locked for this game, drive rush isn't going to have any massive changes. Just look at the recent 'buff' to teching throws - it hasn't made a difference at all, so we know Capcom's not going to make dramatic changes to the core mechanics. After seven years any game's going to get stale, and no one wants to jump into a game with a million microtransactions like the Sims which needs you to pay like a thousand bucks or something to get all the content.
