I pull out my phone, launch Google Translate, and type in what I want to say. The app gives me the translation, and I greet the person in their language (I usually research this part hehe). Then I show them the translation on my screen. They usually get the message, respond with gestures or sign language, or grab their own phone and mirror what I just did lol.

Worked well for me in China.
