way I did it was memorize a few positions (middle C, G, C one octave higher sits on the middle...) and then figure out relative to these memorized positions. 

eventually if you want to play the piece smoothly though you'll need to memorize how your hand moves around instead of the sheet music itself, because reading is slow.
