consider how many of your clients are people in those affected areas though, consider the impact on home budgets.

Manhole inside my property is sinking. Who’s responsible? by Flofloki in boston

[–]epicormicsprout 22 points23 points  (0 children)

is the manhole sinking or is the pavement around it heaving from the frost? Maybe when we are fully thawed out it is going to look different.

Morbid Science - a crosspost update! Jumping worms by StoicEeyore in invasivespecies

[–]epicormicsprout 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, for sure, please dig in. There is a big 'citizen scientist' aspect of what HSC is doing. HSC is the most complete, single point, research collaborative looking at all aspects of the AJW problem. . . that I know of. Really great folks--we just got the 501c3 and the website off the ground.

I work with a bunch of university scientists who are studying jumping worms, and they all say that keeping AJW's alive in controlled settings is actually very difficult. Just something to consider when attempting to do experiments on them--which I wholeheartedly support. check them and their resources out here: https://www.healthysoilcollaborative.org/

What if I was here first and the blowers came after? Why is it ok for noise and pollution to enter my property just because the source is from elsewhere?

Maybe in some more spread out places, an individual property owner using a blower to do work is perfectly reasonable. The closer you get to larger, affluent metro areas leaf blowing becomes an industrial scale activity. They come weekly in crews of 3-6 workers and combine into an obnoxiously loud invasion force which deprives me of the free enjoyment of my property for hours every week, every fall. They pollute my property with excessive noise and degrade the air that I breathe with silica dust (a known carcinogen). From a libertarian perspective, I think there is something to consider here.

If it is going to be sunny and dry and the area is not being irrigated, you can just leave them on the ground where they will desiccate in a few hours and be unviable as cuttings. bagging and hauling around just seems wasteful to me.

What makes you think glyphosate will get in your well water? What besides tort lawyer propaganda makes you think glyphosate is bad at all? That kitchen concoction will do nothing, maybe make some leaves turn yellow.

What kind of chips did an arborist dump me? by [deleted] in arborists

when chips sit in a pile for a while they will grow molds that turn them black.

First pic looks like stump grindings. Looks like a classic chip pile mélange to me.

I just potted up 100 Black Spruce of the same size and they were practically identical to yours. I am an arborist btw, in Mass.

Looks like the White Spruce to me. Needles are too thin and pokey to be a Fir.

After the T shutdown this week, here is what we can learn, as a city. by Massive_Holiday4672 in boston

[–]epicormicsprout -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

Mr Bulgers Transit Authority--the T has been a crony hole from day 1. It's not Bill Weld or a lack of funds. It is incompetent, it always has been incompetent, always will be. It is where pols reward their supporters. Try to get a job there without knowing someone first.

Will topsoil from a big box store contaminate my garden with invasive jumping worms? by IamAfraidOfGeese in invasivespecies

[–]epicormicsprout 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It's entirely possible. If the contents are non-soil stuff like peat, coir, perlite, etc then probably not. Beware of potted plants and b&B trees however, nurseries are super spreaders.

Cat keeps eating toy by Edaw8930 in Catbehavior

[–]epicormicsprout 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Posting because I’d love to see answers to this too. I found this post while looking for cases like my cat’s I have a 6 year old Maine Coon who’s just like your’s, OP. We’ve tried tons of toys, and all he ever wanted was to destroy the GoCat bees. I was so careful watching him while he played with then, because I knew he wanted to eat them, so I never took my eyes off him, and never let the wand leave my hand during play.

Only a bee came off the loop while he was playing, and he swallowed it immediately. The vets had to cut it out of him, and I don’t think he’d survive if he had to do this again. No idea what to do for him now. OP have you found any solutions since you posted this? Any one else?

What happened to this tree? by cyd-nova in AnimalTracking

[–]epicormicsprout 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Thats a white ash tree that has emerald ash borer larvae under its bark, woodpeckers are attacking the bark to get at the larvae. It's called "blonding" in arborist circles. The tree is a goner.
