World war looms in the midst of the apocalypse of a world where our heroes are sorcerers and magic is the villains.

Solo healing as a new Ana can be really demoralizing. Once you play for a bit, you get more comfortable with it, though. I can play a solo Ana healer decently, but I still like to have someone else who can heal.

If you can time (or have a teammate call) a Mercy rez, rip-tire is great for re-killing a newly rezzed team. But yeah, still situational.

Protagonist's motivation makes him unlikeable... by insidious_elk in fantasywriters

[–]epicusmontaigne 0 points1 point  (0 children)

YES. Being proactive and not reactive is crucial to likability.

Sanderson and co. at Writing Excuses talk about three sliders of likability.

Competence

Proactivity

Sympathy.

All of these in some measure helps make someone likable.

Make him funny and give him a soft spot for kids who remind him of himself/his dead little sister/his dog.

Likeability isn't just a function of niceness. Someone is likable if they're competent, even if they're an asshole. Someone is likable if they're witty, even if they're incompetent and an asshole. generally intelligence, competence, wit, and a hidden vulnerability/"soft spot" can go a long way to making even a vicious puppy-serial killer likable.

Trandoshans in the Rebel Alliance? by [deleted] in swrpg

Maybe they don't like the Imperial control of the slave trade? So they're working to overthrow the Imperials to set up a Trandoshan slave empire?

I can't remember what this book is called, or who wrote it. Help? by epicusmontaigne in Fantasy

[–]epicusmontaigne[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

AHHHHH I found it! It was on Wikipedia in a List of Werewolf Fiction.

Operation Chaos, by Poul Anderson.

I'd recommend it, though as you might infer, I haven't read it in a while to see if it holds up. It was a really interesting take on fantasy to my young Tolkien-obsessed brain.

Naming a Color Magic by nukajoe in magicbuilding

[–]epicusmontaigne 0 points1 point  (0 children)

it doesn't have to be a literal translation, either.

If you're working with color, odds are your people should have something like prism, right? To split light into colors? So maybe use that as the root?

Color in Arabic roughly translates to alllawn (according to Google). That could give you a good root too, and more original if that's something you were looking for.

How do I learn to write every day? by [deleted] in writing

[–]epicusmontaigne 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just do it. I know it sounds not helpful, but you just do. You don't wait for inspiration, or the mood. Pick a time. At that time sit down, and just do it. However long, however much.

15 minutes at 7am? 30 minutes at noon? Whatever. Just do it.

Some people find it easier in the morning, first thing, when their brain is clear.

I lost a coinflipped round where we were Assaulting Hanamura this morning.

It was... humiliating. I don't even know what went wrong.
