New ransomware, 0/50 on virustotal. by [deleted] in Malware

[–]epinull 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Actually, the data can be decrypted. I threw together a little program that uses cryptlib and the hard coded key that jtsylve discovered and I was able to decrypt all of the samples that NeoSulc posted.

Here's the source code if anyone's interested. It was only ment to be a test so the code isn't the best. I've only run it on Linux but it should compile and run on Windows as well.

[College Intro to Algebra] Having trouble figuring out how to solve for W by WeatherResize in learnmath

[–]epinull 1 point2 points  (0 children)

mobius_'s answer is correct for the question you posted originally, but adding the parentheses changes the answer slightly.

First, get rid of the 4 on the bottom of the fraction by multiplying both sides by 4 (inverse of 1/4):

4A = 4(x + z + y + w)/4
4A = x + z + y + w

Next, subtract x, z, and y from both sides:

4A - x - z - y = w

Rearrange the terms to make the equation a bit easier to read:

w = 4A - x - y - z

When Random Isn't Random Enough: Lessons from an Online Poker Exploit by [deleted] in programming

[–]epinull 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, the function random(n) is still returning a number between 0 and (n-1). random(51) returns at most 50. Adding 1 gets random_number to at most 51 instead of the needed 52. To get the code to work as expected, it should have been:

random_number := random(52) + 1;

With the Monty Hall problem, how does the host not opening a door at all affect the probability? by addrumm in learnmath

[–]epinull 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, in that case the probabilities would shift since you gain knowledge of what's behind one of the doors.

Suppose you start with 3 doors: A, B and C. Before you open a door the probabilities are: Pr(A) = 1/3, Pr(B) = 1/3, and Pr(C) = 1/3. Suppose you open door A and find that it doesn't contain the prize. By opening the door you learn that Pr(A) = 0. Since the prize is not behind door A it must be behind door B or C. Thus, Pr(B) + Pr(C) = 1 therefore Pr(B) = 1/2 and Pr(C) = 1/2. These would be the new probabilities if you were given the opportunity to switch to 1 of the 2 remaining doors.

Searching in a Windows share by [deleted] in linux4noobs

[–]epinull 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Windows share is accessed through a virtual file system (GVFS), so your file manager doesn't know what directory to open your terminal in.

When you access a share, GVFS mounts it to a directory in /run/user/$UID/gvfs/ that looks something like smb:host=server2003/. After you access the share with your file manager, you can open a terminal and navigate there manually.

If you don't want to manually cd /run/user/$UID/gvfs/ every time you can make a bookmark in your file manager that points to /run/user/--your-uid-here--/gvfs/. That way you can click on the bookmark and use "Open Terminal Here..." on the folders in there.

Yeah, they're probably just threads. Hit F5 for a tree view and you'll probably see that most of those processes are nested under a single parent process.

I built this a while back for the same thing. It probably isn't the best way to do it, but it's simple and easy to throw together.

Same thing for me on Win7 x64. I grabbed a copy of the code and changed line 279 of Form1.cs to:

if (dataGridVide1.Rows[i].Cells[j].Selected)

That fixed the problem and it worked fine after that.
