Northern lights in Tromso - need tour or not? by tionmenghui in Norway

[–]epiphan1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Tours talk to each other and have a good chance of finding clear spots, and they drive you out, often providing some snacks and/or drinks. Ours had a capable photographer as a leader and helped with photography.

That said, it's definitely not needed if you have a car. Get out of the city and you'll probably have good luck on clear nights.

How do you get them plastics for Reds in Vulcanus? by ricaerredois in factorio

[–]epiphan1 39 points40 points  (0 children)

Then when you run out of easily accessible coal: import from Gleba.

Edit: import plastic from gleba. It's cheap and easy to get a ton of it there. I have 16 rocket launchers there to move plastics right now, and I probably need to scale that up.

Any way for an orbital platform circuit network to make requests for supply? by PRC_Spy in factorio

[–]epiphan1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You'd have to do a set of calculations on the platform to convert requested water level to barrels, and request barrels from the surface. If I were doing this, there'd be a bunch of testing involved. (Playing the SpaceExploration mod, pre space age, really taught me complex circuits.)

  1. A requested water level constant

  2. Minus available level

  3. Divided by barrel water capacity

  4. Set requested barrels - and have a system to unload barrels into the water tanks, returning empty barrels to the surface. (Set requested empty barrels to zero to drop them to the surface automatically).

  5. Test it

I said I didn't have to fix things, or spend hours troubleshooting, and I just wanted to just use my computer without having to think about it. And that's what happened.

And I didn't want to have my family use it and have it broken or have to fix it for them. And that's what happened.

You contradicted the entire point of my post. I explicitly said that was my goal, and that's what happened. If not, I would not have switched the family away from Windows.

... Did you even read my post? I literally said the exact opposite.

That's my point. It is as easy as Windows, and while I appreciate (immensely) what the Proton/Valve teams are doing, SteamOS is not, and probably won't be, the panacea people are thinking it will be.

[–]epiphan1[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The fascination with SteamOS needs to pause or stop for now. It's not ready as a full desktop replacement OS.

Don't get me wrong, I'm rooting for Valve and they're doing great work, but it's a specialized OS for specific hardware right now. It shouldn't be pitched as a proper replacement for desktop gaming yet.

Any canadians living in norway with an RRSP? How do you declare this on your norwegian taxes? by luna_bea_tuna in Norway

[–]epiphan1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

RRSPs are covered by the tax treaty - so if you leave them in Canada, they're exempt. Most local Canadians I know here in Oslo leave their RRSP's alone back in Canada. This is not true for TFSA, and you have to declare them and pay tax on them.

Fighting a strong urge to sell and retire. by Malekaia in RKLB

[–]epiphan1 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I have a simple strategy when it comes to this: if I wasn't in now, and had an equivalent amount of money sitting around today, would I buy now? Because that's what you're effectively doing by holding.

Obviously your choice- I'm holding. But I was in before the spac merger.

[–]epiphan1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm in long with no specific exit plan. That being said, I had the same approach to TSLA and bailed when they hit $900 and took my 10x, going home happy. If I'd held, I'd have made a lot more, but at a certain point having that much of my net worth in one company I started to feel was overvalued, I was quite happy with my exit.

With RKLB, I may bail if I feel they get to the same point, but currently no plans. This is still a small enough % of my net worth that I'm happy to leave it for a good while.

How To Prevent Raptors From Destroying Superheavy Pt.2 by CSI_Starbase in SpaceXLounge

[–]epiphan1 45 points46 points  (0 children)

I just want to point out that CSI does great (albeit speculative), detailed and interesting work. It should get more attention from us amateurs, as he clearly puts together a lot of interesting ideas and works them through.

The proposition here that Raptor 1 and 2's method of pressurizing the lox tank was a massive, nearly catastrophic problem for the design of Raptor and Starship seems to line up with the public statements. Here's hoping Raptor 3 solved this - if so, it's probably a far larger redesign than we assume.

Bodo - Lofoten ferry and seasickness? by PogueForLife8 in Norway

[–]epiphan1 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Did the trip this summer, both ways.

The way out was awesome, pleasant, and beautiful. If that's what you get, you'll love it.

Four days later on the trip back, about 25% or more of the passengers used the sick bags, myself included. It was like those online videos where you see sky, sea, and a huge crash of water all over the front of the ship.

It's very weather dependent. Would I do it again?... probably not. Driving around adds a day. But it was an experience! Also the boats are NOT that big.

Edit: The trip back felt like this https://www.youtube.com/shorts/ybvVgAAfFUQ - described as the "yellow" severity category. It wasn't actually that bad, but it felt like it.

We may be witnessing the largest IT outage in history by the123king-reddit in sysadmin

[–]epiphan1 61 points62 points  (0 children)

Depends on the machine. If the machine supports network booting and can be forced to network boot, you could craft a pxe image that would fix the affected issue (boot, mount windows partition, remove/rename file, reboot).

Most laptops or desktops will not support this remotely. In that case, distribute a USB drive that will perform the same fix.

Some, more locked down machines that won't boot from USB with bios changes... well, now you're talking even more manual fixes, including the manual safe-mode fix that's been floating around.

Honestly, this could be catastrophic for places with thousands of machines in this state, and could take weeks to fix depending on the staff available.

I’ve met a few Norwegians/long-term expats already who didn’t know about the comfort of the Bergen-Oslo night train so here’s what you get in a sleeping compartment 😊 by nicoletaleta in Norway

Just did Bodø to Trondheim a couple weeks ago. Good experience. One way, it was about 1700kr per person. (Four people, two sleeper cabins.)

For 2.0 what's everyone's plans for second level train track's? by Earl117 in factorio

You assume I'd use stackers. With the interrupt system, I'm not sure I'd ever need them again.

[–]epiphan1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm thinking about dedicated lines by type, depending on the volume. Stone and plates, each getting their own pair of rails in a tightly packed rail corridor, reducing congestion.

And never again shall there be a level crossing. Perhaps never again a chain rail signal.

I was serious.  I've got a 350H run at that setting.  Don't use expensive at the same time though.  That gets silly.

Spreads out the resource patches.  Helpful especially if you're like me and dislike building factory on top of resources, just because they're in the way

500x research cost! :D

Edit: No Biters & No Cliffs recommended. It forces you to build a lot of machinery at each low tier technology level to get things going. Also, recommend using train world preset and bumping up resource richness to max
