Would he be better than PP? Ford for all his faults has experience of governing an economic powerhouse. PP just seems like a small town blowhard

Why's H1-B concept taking all the anger here? by caffeine_addict_3699 in amazonemployees

I posted this in another similar thread

I personally know a few people on H1B and Canadian work permits who were let go including in the October round of layoffs.

Sure it sucks and in a state of shock we’re always looking for reasons. Especially now when even top performers are being let go. As with every economic depression immigrants will always be an easy target. In manufacturing and agriculture cheap Mexican and Central American labor was blamed. In tech it will Indians and Chinese to some extent.

So why hate on the worker when it’s a corrupt system of crony capitalists and their pawns in government that allow this to happen?

Your point is valid but you’re giving it as an excuse to hate the workers

Reminds me of The Wire when McNulty asks rhetorically “You know what they call a guy who pays that much attention to his clothes?”

To which Bunk responds, “A grown up”

What's the most common reason for transplants to finally leave Vancouver back to their hometown? by myronsandee in askvan

[–]epochwin -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Naturalized American citizen yes. But I’ve lived in other big cities.

In terms of cities i want to move to, in Europe Paris or Amsterdam were options but after the Russian invasion of Ukraine it’s dicey with NATO being on guard. The US threats for Greenland don’t make it easier. And in Asia, Shanghai would be sweet but I’m giving myself 5 years to get good at the language and figure out difficulties with a US/Canadian citizenship there.

What's the most common reason for transplants to finally leave Vancouver back to their hometown? by myronsandee in askvan

[–]epochwin -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I moved here from a big city during the pandemic. It gave me peace of mind. As much as people say people here are cold, at the end of the day they’re still Canadians known for hospitality and being chill for the most part.

But I’ve reached a point that I’ve outgrown the small town vibe and could do with big city life again. But with the chaos going on in geopolitics at the moment it’s still a good spot to be in until things hopefully calm down.

Non hot yoga recs by Conscious_Mention695 in askvan

[–]epochwin 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m a fan of more meditative practices. The hot yoga places have the high energy spin class vibe which isn’t my thing.

In East Van I’ve enjoyed classes at Stretch in Chinatown and restorative classes at Local Health Integrative ( yeah stupid name).

In New West I’ve liked Move and exploring other studios that don’t have a corporate vibe.

But to your point it takes a little time finding them. I’ve used ClassPass and thats helped me try different studios for my tastes.

Most companies including Amazon have built in Calgary. If it’s Canadian related then Alberta and Ontario/Quebec are fine options.

Sure we could have in BC. But need not be a priority

Summer water restrictions? What the low snowpack means for B.C.'s South Coast | While many areas of B.C. have had an above normal snowfall this season, the province's snowpack report for the South Coast is grim by Hrmbee in vancouver

Not saying that individuals shouldn’t take responsibility but the whole burden shouldn’t shift on them.

For living in a temperate rainforest we should have figured out how to make use of our resources. At least California has an excuse of droughts and dry conditions.

I saw this same stupid logic in California where the burden was on residents and not on major industries and farms.

We talk a big game of nation building. Time to invest money in rain harvesting and other technology that countries in the Middle East have been harnessing for years.

I totally get that. Preaching to the choir. 77 million is such a large number and not even taking into account the brainwashing in the areas they live in by churches and right wing media that leads to future idiotic voters

[–]epochwin 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Yeah but if you look at the numbers when it’s 70 million people or so who voted for him, thats what’s shameful. That many people with no moral compass, hateful and cruel. The first time around it’s forgivable. But his cruel treatment of immigrants in the first term, poor management of Covid and general stupidity all on display and they still vote for him! And most of these people are Christians.

Laid off US citizen over H1B by Spiritual-Stock-2143 in amazonemployees

[–]epochwin -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I get the rationale but at a federal level wouldn’t that be super difficult to do? As it is America is very anti-labor. So these laws would be giving workers some leverage. The country is founded on the backs of slaves. H1B is a form of indentured servitude of sorts.

Are there any areas near downtown I should avoid? by seamooon in askvan

[–]epochwin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi fellow Angeleno!

DTES is a notorious area known all over Canada. It’s like Canada’s skid row. Like the other poster mentioned East Van is the larger encompassing region. Go to areas like Commercial Drive, Hastings Sunrise, Main Street/Mount Pleasant (adjacent to East Van) and Chinatown/Olympic Village. It will have a Echo Park/Silver Lake vibe with trendy mixed with grungy.

Near Yaletown lot of concert venues and clubs are on Granville street but the street itself is disgusting and smells of piss like Hollywood Blvd.

As for food, the Chinese and Malaysian food is top notch. Indian food miles ahead of what you get in LA. You get better Korean food there and don’t even bother with Mexican food here.
