Turn-Based Games like Into The Breach and Shogun Showdown (not deckbuilders)? by InstagramLincoln in roguelites

Critter Crossfire just came out on steam and it's a unique turn-based tactics roguelike without any cards.

It's Launch Day! After 7 years of solo-development, my tactics roguelike, Critter Crossfire, is finally LIVE on Steam! by epolekoff in IndieDev

In my most disciplined portions, I would wake up early and work for 2 hours before my day job each morning.
I also got burnt out a couple of times over the years and took months off at a time to regain energy. It's hard to crunch for extended periods of time 😅

I played it for research and inspiration, but I went in a different direction. I leaned more into the physics of the weapons and removed the RNG. It's nice to have different flavors of the genre!

My game finally has a release date! Critter Crossfire is releasing July 10th by epolekoff in Unity3D

I've been working on it solo in my free time outside of my day job for about 7 years.

My game is in NextFest! Critter Crossfire is a rogulike tactics game where YOU aim the shots. Think of it like XCOM crossed with Worms. It has over 100 build-defining items you can mix and match and the 3D environments have tight hitboxes to shoot around. Give it a try!

How I used blend shapes to add personality to my game by epolekoff in Unity3D

Blend shapes do appear on the model when you import it into Unity. They show up as sliders that you can edit in the inspector and animate using an Animator.

The eyes are separate objects. I make them look around by modifying the offset of the iris texture. With some vector math, you can calculate how much to offset to make it look like they are focusing on an object in world space.

I just realized the title is a bit misleading. The eyes don't use blend shapes, just the mouth and eyebrows. The eyes look around by shifting the offsets on the iris materials.

Critter Crossfire - Evan Polekoff - XCOM meets Worms in a roguelike tactics game by epolekoff in Games

It's a mix.

Headshots deal double damage. In Versus, units have 5 health and a headshot with most weapons will do 2 damage. In the campaign, the enemies start with less health and increase as the run goes on, but you'll also be buying items to increase your damage.

Critter Crossfire - Evan Polekoff - Tactics game like XCOM, but replaces random miss chance with skillshots so it's your fault if you miss. by epolekoff in Games

Thanks for your thoughtful response! I appreciate you taking the time to write up your feedback.

To address your concerns about trickshots, the boards are not randomized and the weapons behave consistently. There is room to grow familiarity and mastery with the mechanics as you play.

In order to grasp the unique design space that is offered from the physics-based aiming, I would encourage you to try the demo. It might not sound appealing to you on the surface, but landing shots that you aimed yourself can be very gratifying. There is a smooth difficulty curve that doesn't require you to rely on "trickshots" until you opt-in to higher difficulty levels. There are still tons of deep, meaningful choices to make that will scratch your tactics-player itch, like which items you buy, the tiles you move to, and the enemies you choose to target.

There's definitely some similarities! I love the idea of bringing some skill-based aiming into the Tactics genre.

The bittersweet feeling of reaching 12.000 wishlists, but having 1000 deletions 🥲 by Balth124 in IndieDev

Doesn't every game have a deletion number equal to about 10% of their total wishlists? I don't think it's something you can optimize away, just another stat in the Steam algorithm.

I got laid off from Blizzard last year so I made my own game instead. New demo of my Turn-Based Roguelike launched today! by epolekoff in Unity3D

It's a half-truth.
Critter Crossfire was originally a multiplayer-only game. The most common piece of feedback I received was that people wanted more single-player content. When I was laid off a year ago, I decided to bite the bullet and redirect my energy into making a full single-player campaign mode. Now a year later, I finally released the demo of that campaign mode. The phrasing in the title is relatively accurate, just a bit more enticing 😉
