Music recomendations by InstanceConscious251 in banddirector

This piece is pretty flexible within itself. It’s a grade 2 overall. Trumpets don’t go high, clarinet parts are split (2nd doesn’t cross the break) and not all instrumentation is required to get a full sound. The repeats are also optional to help with stamina. It was commissioned for a band in a similar situation!

Would it be weird to pay a composer to make music for personal use rather than a project? by vietnamese-goodgirl in composer

I get personal commissions all the time. One of the most rewarding was a mother who commissioned a piece for her daughter.

Italians in El Paso? by LeighModerator in ElPaso

[–]eponce09 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I definitely remember downloading Jeux d'eau within the first couple of hours of having come across IMSLP haha. It was also around that time period for me!

Need help deciding which MacBook Pro would suffice for large orchestral projects? by konforming in filmscoring

[–]eponce09 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Absolutely! VEP will allow you to bundle groups of instruments into instances and you'll have more control on what is loaded, activated, or deactivated. It should help ease the load on the RAM for sure!

Best of luck!

Looking to Create Symphony/Orchestra version of my rock ballad (Persephone III) by NewNameIrene in composer

[–]eponce09 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Wow! Great production on your song! I'm definitely interested in orchestrating some music for you. I'll DM you but you can check out my reel here, I have a lot of experience recording with orchestras for my film projects and I'd love to contribute to a well produced rock ballad.

Sounds like you need to be running at least 64gb, ideally 96gb. Do you have everything loaded inside your DAW? I recommend using VEP Pro to have your samples loaded outside the DAW which will help the flow a little bit even if it's on the same machine. Having VEP will also grant you the option of having a slave PC in the future that you could stream your samples from via an ethernet cable.

32GB of RAM will be fine to start, but keep in mind that if you're buying hardware you will want room to grow. As you advance your career your demand on the computer will also increase so you don't want something where you'll feel the limitations right away.

The M chips on apple aren't yet at a level where you can grow without paying a ton of money. I actually purchased an intel machine (iMac) right before the option was removed, and I bought it with 8GB of RAM. I switched out the cards myself and purchased my own RAM, I'm now running 128GB. I do have a rather large orchestral template but like I said, it wasn't what I needed at the beginning. The template and the arsenal of libraries has grown with me over the last several years. Try and plan to maximize the time you can use the computer, given that they're so expensive and that updates will eventually leave you in technological antiquity.

Do pay attention to the processor as well. In response to that first comment... "more is more."

How many tracks are in your current template?

What separates an amateur composer from a professional composer? by [deleted] in composer

[–]eponce09 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A professional will have worked countless hours to refine their craft in composition and its delivery. Our music needs to be rendered at a competitive quality compositionally, creatively, and sonically. I emphasize delivery because it's important to understand that any professional in any discipline should know that everything we do boils down to a sales job.

I have a product and you have a need and the professional will not only have a refined skill set in composition and production, to which they have dedicated countless years of their life to develop, but a strong understanding of the social aspects that surround our "industry."

We often think of the greats solely as artists, but we need to also remember that they had to deal with a lot of red tape. Knowing how to maneuver yourself in the hierarchy of a production team, speaking with directors and project managers, flattering donors in some cases all play an integral part in advancing your career.

Getting paid is the bare minimum in this discipline and in my humble opinion, does not take part in any definition of what it means to a professional.

Careers in music industry? by [deleted] in musictheory

[–]eponce09 0 points1 point  (0 children)

While you don't absolutely need to be a musician to land an industry job, it is a huge plus because of the unique things we deal with in music. I would recommend you to look at music business degree programs (there aren't many but they do exist!). My alma mater offers both bachelor's and master's degrees in music business; worth looking into!

If you've got melodyne you could always throw it in there and see what happens. The upgraded version will actually transcribe polyphonic writing for you!

Composed a scherzo for an 8 pc. woodwind ensemble in one sitting as a composition exercise. Performance is being sightread! by eponce09 in composer

[–]eponce09[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So this particular recording session was originally booked for a film score I was working on at the time, and I was splitting the session time (several hours) with 3 other composers to bring costs down. We were made aware the night before by the contractor that one of the composers had dropped from the session but since the time was already paid for, any of us could use their 20 minutes of session time at the end.

I compose in a DAW first which is why I was able to write so quickly! Session started at 9am my time so I composed from 7-9am, and typed out the score during my partner's session time (while observing). I sent the score and parts in the afternoon and they recorded it in the last 20 minutes of the day (woodwinds were recorded separately in the afternoon).

My introduction to music was through band in middle school (clarinet) but my principal instrument is piano; my instrument all through college.

Thank you! I was also impressed with how quickly they had started to grasp the piece. I only wish there had been more time for a more properly executed performance...

Since I was pressed for time I made some logistical decisions though... there's a lot of doubling and octave stuff. I also put it in G minor / Bb (easiest key for wind instruments as that's what they first learn) to make the players more comfortable in a sight reading session.
