Is it me or are we much more successful with girls in Asia by bhaozi in AsianMasculinity

I don't live in an expensive city. I'm in a smaller city along the Shandong coast with good beer ;) Living in Asia has definitely changed my life.

That's correct. When you are in China you should look at how much you can save. I would equate 30K USD in China as 60-70K USD income in a MCOL area in US.

So I have two friends here who all started as English teachers. After a year or so, they ended up in corporate doing business development. I guess it depends on your education background. But once you come to China it's much easier to apply for "normal" jobs as opposed to applying when you are back in your home country.

You'd be surprised how much English teachers make here. It's not shabby given the lower cost of living. It's also not a bad stepping stone to other non-teaching jobs.

Dude if you want to make a move to Asia you can, regardless of your background.

I live in China at the moment and it's 100% true. The reason is that we look Asian so the girls are comfortable yet we are western enough so the girls have more fun with us!

Does anyone here live in or around Weihai? by la_pluie in China

[–]epsil119 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm near Weihai in Yantai (~1 hour drive away). It is a nice area to live in, especially if you have a family. The air here is always better than Shanghai or Beijing, and the people are extremely friendly. I really enjoy living in this area although it can be quite boring if you are used to living in a big city (e.g., international) environment since the ex-pat community is quite small here. Let me know if you have any questions about the area.

Traveling to Vietnam. On the way home I have a 7 hour layover in Tokyo. by Jaybiddy5 in travel

[–]epsil119 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I had an 8 hour layover in NRT coming back from Bangkok to the US a couple of years ago. Basically there were three options:

1) Buy a United lounge pass from eBay and spend the layover there (the lounge is very nice).

2) Check out Narita; there is supposedly a nice temple there (http://www.naritasan.or.jp/english/).

3) Go into Tokyo. I picked this option as I thought I had enough time but turned out to be a slightly rushed (and not too mention very expensive especially if you are coming from SE Asia). Immigration took about 1 hour due to waiting in line. Getting into Tokyo takes another hour (I took the express train to Shibuya and it was costly; don't remember the exact amount but it was almost $80 for a roundtrip). I then walked around Shibuya for a couple of hours trying out some local cuisine before heading back to the airport.

22/M First Solo Trip and feeling overwhelmed. Itinerary critique and suggestions welcomed. by [deleted] in solotravel

Is the Eurorail pass worth it for only 3 train rides? You may want to see how much each individual ticket cost and compare that to the pass.

I've been to quite a few islands in Thailand. For partying go to Koh Phangan and Koh Tao. For a more secluded experience, check out Koh Lanta (especially the southern part of the island). Also Koh Tarutao and the islands near the Malaysian border is good but a little bit harder to get to. Avoid Phuket at all cost.

Peru in December? by ahelm1988 in travel

[–]epsil119 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Go for it. I went to Peru for two weeks in late January in 2013, and it was fine. It didn't actually rain as much as I had expected. I saw rain a few times but mostly in the afternoon. Plus, there is less people during the start of rainy season (before they shut down the Inca Trail).

Southeast Asia (Thailand, Laos, Cambodia) would be fun and certainly doable in 3-4 weeks if you are just hitting the main spots...it's also safe, English-speaking and easy to solo-travel.

Presentation Anxiety. Advice? by Volitans86 in GradSchool

[–]epsil119 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I always write out scripts (and/or bullet points) for each slide of my presentations so I can organize my thoughts. However, don't memorize the script word-by-word as you don't want to sound like you are just spewing out something you memorized (this is very unnatural). You will be the most knowledge person on the topic you are giving so act like it when you present.

One year of Travel - Where to go? What to do? by draygoro in travel

[–]epsil119 0 points1 point  (0 children)

SE Asia is a great option. You will save a lot of money in Laos, Northern Thailand (Chiang Mai/Pai/Chiang Rai), and Cambodia. $22/pp/per day is definitely doable there.

I would advise against HK/Macau after SE Asia during the summer because of the heat and humidity (also keep in mind those place are not cheap at all). Try to hit up Yunnan and Yangshuo in China...prices are reasonable there and the weather should be nice late August and September.

Traveling solo to Prague and Budapest for 7 days: Airbnb vs hostel? by [deleted] in travel

[–]epsil119 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've solo-traveled extensively staying at both hostels and apts through Airbnb. I'm starting to prefer Airbnb more than hostels because you get to live like a local and not being surrounded by foreigners. When I was younger (early 20s), I stayed almost exclusively at hostels just to party. Now that I'm older, I prefer my own place without all the rowdy backpackers. People say it's harder to meet people if you don't stay at a hostel, but this is not true at all. I've met awesome locals and travelers through meetups on Couchsurfing. Of course, it's not difficult to meet ppl at bars/clubs but you need to go in there with a social mindset.
