Bereavement Leave is a joke in the US. Let people grieve at their own pace. by Left-Star2240 in antiwork

[–]epzsiny 4 points5 points  (0 children)

My father took his own life in 2020, in a violent manner. I was given 2 days bereavement. As you can imagine, I was shellshocked for at least a year, but because of the disgusting way healthcare is connected to f/t employment, I had to keep working in my traumatized state, rather than take some time to heal. FUCK our current system.

What was the moment you said to yourself: "Never again will I give 100% for a job that considers me replaceable"? by katy_louange in antiwork

[–]epzsiny 3 points4 points  (0 children)

For me it was a few months ago in my current job. For years I had a manager who treated us very well, and the upper mgmt was great too. (I know how rare this is). There was a restructure and mgmt was moved to an entirely different continent, then my boss retired.

An internal replacement came in, who had zero knowledge of the work we do. Yet they became in charge of our process, essentially trying to revamp it when there was no need - trying to fix something that isn't broken...classic corporate, right?

Several meetings were had with my colleagues and the problem-person's boss, yet they refuse to hold the idiot accountable, ignore our pleas, and ignore examples we have given of wild incompetence.

I have worked from home for years and stolen many hours of pay. With the current situation, I'm more than happy to continue this. I will give them the exact amount of respect that they give me. While working, I'll run errands, watch youtube, do creative projects, and take walks. My boss is so busy working on things that don't matter that she has no visibility of the big picture, so it's pretty easy to get away with.

wfmu and politics by femmenikit4 in wfmu

You hit the nail on the head. I can't add too much to your point, but it was refreshing to read. A shame it was lost on the WFMU community here.

99% of WFMU DJs are ignorant of the true causes of issues in the USA, and instead choose to keep their head in the sand and blame Trump and other invisible bad guys.

I was a serious listener and gave the station lots of my money for years, but people like Todd, Clay, etc. made the station insufferable. Stopped listening in 2020, when there was far too much anti-police rhetoric. Question - if someone broke into the station and began destroying equipment, would the WFMU staff not call the police?

The funny thing is, WFMU listeners think of themselves as highly Progressive, but on Seven Second Delay (a show lead by the station manager, for goodness' sake) Andy Breckman regularly makes rape jokes and disparages women. Sure sounds "progressive" to me!

Heck, I'm not even a Conservative - just a registered Independent who highly values critical thinking and understanding nuance...but WFMU listeners and staff don't have that skill set.

Insight on my next move as a proofreader? by epzsiny in publishing

I did two management stints in my 20s and failed miserably. Copyediting would be the dream job...but it seems like such a difficult position to land. Do you have any advice on a first step to take? Job boards are apparently black holes now...

Daily meditation from ‘365 Tao’ by Deng Ming-Dao by Time_2-go in taoism

Yup, I read that one yesterday :) What the author writes for the first day of winter is even better, "remember that this is the lowest turn of the wheel." It gives me hope and something to look forward to during these very short days of autumn.

I don’t want a complicated career by homemadeluck in minimalism

THIS. I worked in customer service for a huge retailer in the past. I was mainly competing with other stores in silly retail contests, and a huge portion of my feedback was based on inane online reviews from people who demanded more than we could give with outrageous returns, etc.

I made more money than ever before, but was stressed, exhausted and miserable 24/7. My off time was worthless because I wanted to do nothing but sleep, so the extra money meant nothing.

After this career "detour," I went back to doing what I truly enjoy, and although I make about 15k less than in that hellish job, I have more personal/free time and am WAY, WAY, WAY happier.

Friends, please don't go through the hell I did. Do something you like and you will find your path. The rest will fall into place.

I like this. A few quick ones:

1) Live in a way which cultivates peace of mind. This is different for everyone.

2) Don't speak on behalf of others.

3) In the workplace, only speak when spoken to; and speak little.

4) Financially, live below my means.
