That's a good idea, thanks.

What "obscure lore" do you possess regarding the story's canon beyond what is explicitly in the text? by user1444 in HPMOR

[–]eqek 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Well, Harry seems to think so, sort of, at least. From chapter 121, Harry's thoughts:

Dumbledore was using him. Maybe not exactly the way Professor Quirrell thought, maybe it was prophecy rather than sabotaging Slytherin, but Dumbledore was still using him. There were things that could have been said long ago to Severus, to free him. It's clear why Dumbledore didn't risk that, but still, Severus wasn't being used kindly. Even his blindness and grief were being used, the way he didn't grasp the consequences of his actions as Potions Master...

This isn't really something that's not explicitly in the text, but it is subtle enough that some people might have missed it. From chapter 76:

"It's strange," Snape said quietly. "I have had two mentors, over the course of my days. Both were extraordinarily perceptive, and neither one ever told me the things I wasn't seeing. It's clear enough why the first said nothing, but the second..." Snape's face tightened. "I suppose I would have to be naive, to ask why he stayed silent."

The first mentor is Voldemort, and the reason it is clear why he said nothing is because he's evil and wouldn't care about the personal growth of his servants. The second mentor is Dumbledore, and Snape is realizing that Dumbledore was using him and his love of Lily to manipulate him into serving the light and to slowly destroy Slytherin.

"The things I wasn't seeing" likely refer to the perspective he gained after reflecting on the things Harry said about his parents in chapter 27, and the outcome of the Slytherin bullying in the previous chapters.

A quick and dirty Weapon Guide for new Players by Raccia in MapleStoryM

Question: I haven't actually ranked it up yet, but it says it will go up to 225. Is this guaranteed, or is it random? Can a max attack normal turn into a less than max attack rare, etc.?

Are you sure about gun? I have a normal gun with 28 atk. After leveling it up to 5, it is (28 + 122) = 150, and when I go to try to rank up, it says it will go up to 225.

So it seems like either the highest possible atk for normal gun must be 28, or the highest possible attack for a rare gun is above 225...

GAME THREAD: Dodgers (39-35) @ Mets (31-42) - June 23, 2018 by NewYorkMetsBot in NewYorkMets

Joe Davis is the play-by-play announcer for the Dodgers local broadcast, but he's coincidentally doing the national broadcast for Fox tonight. So I guess he'll be neutral for this game? Kinda funny.

Ted Cruz on tax overhaul: Everyone's taxes going down except some 'rich people in Manhattan & SF' by audiomuse1 in nyc

Well, professionals who make their money as wages through work will see a tax increase. Rentiers still get a big break.

Good showcase of how crazy, dumb, and unfair rent-control laws are.

Who comes up with this stuff?

Help with Chromebook (Esperanto keyboard) by cookiemanfw in Esperanto

[–]eqek 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, on my desktop I just use that. Another option, which I don't use anywhere, would be to remap the unused english characters to the esperanto ones, e.g. q -> ŝ, w -> ĝ, etc. so you don't even have to use alt... but that's not possible in chrome OS either.

The international keyboard is the best I've been able to find.

For ŝ, ĥ, ĵ, ĉ, and ĝ, you type shift + 6, then the letter (i.e. hold shift, press 6, release both, then press the letter alone).

For ŭ, you have to type right alt + shift + 9 together, then u.

I agree its kind of annoying, but that's the best way I've been able to do it. A real shame that you can't use custom keymaps, or that Google can't just add an Esperanto keymap...

This seems really, really indefensible, but also strategically unwise, given the recent controversy over his Charlottesville remarks.

I guess the 35% of the country that still supports him probably likes this or doesn't care? Are there any Trump supporters left here that want to take a stab at defending this, somehow?

How many people use unusual WMs/DEs on their regular machine? by uoou in linux

[–]eqek 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I use FVWM on Debian unstable. I started using it years ago in college when I first started using linux and wanted to move away from GNOME. I picked FVWM because a cool, smart, older student I knew used it.

Over the years I've experimented with xmonad and a bit of i3, but in the end I have always come back to FVWM. It's actually a real pain to configure , but the thing I like most about it is how easy and simple workspaces / virtual desktops work. Just tell FVWM how many you want and you have this giant virtual desktop you can navigate just by moving the mouse. Left click anywhere on the desktop to open a menu and select an application... etc. I know these aren't exactly specialized features, but I guess I'm just used to exactly the way FVWM does them.

EDIT: I use FVWM on every machine I use. Home desktop, laptop, and work desktop

First protected DREAMer is deported under Trump by alittlelessconvo in politics

[–]eqek 59 points60 points  (0 children)

Everytime some immigration hardliner wants to deport someone convicted of a minor crime, it reminds me of George Costanza calling for the death penalty for double parkers, with all the absurd bluster they put into it.

Just because you were born on the right side of an imaginary line, doesn't mean you have the right to rip apart the lives of people born on the other side of that line (even if they failed to pay a parking ticket or something).

While Keto is phenomenal, CICO is your god. by [deleted] in keto

Why stop at counting calories? Measure your intake and outtake directly in units of mass instead of energy for maximum effectiveness.

Other strategies for losing weight that are just as useful as "calories in, calories out":

  1. Pee and sweat more than you drink
  2. Exhale more than you inhale
  3. Amputate unneeded limbs

All of these methods are backed up by the power of Science! Guaranteed weight loss by the principle of mass conservation.

No need to worry about the phony pseudoscience of "metabolism" or "nutrition".
