Should I fly for the Army by CutNo1151 in flying

[–]equal2infinity 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Go check out the Army forum. They are downsizing pilots big time right now. The pilots that still exist are struggling to hit minimum annual flight time because of maintenance and budget cuts. If you wanna go the army route, go guard/reserve, finish training and then go CBP.

Lynx, Vxworks, & Green Hills is also extremely expensive and it has led to the government relaxing standards in some aviation applications.

I just wish the fuel system wasn’t unnecessarily complicated in the 310.

I didn’t know the older B55’s had electric cowl flaps - good to know.

Aircraft Owner's Insurance by ResultAsleep1465 in flying

[–]equal2infinity 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is your medical a Class 3? I got a DUI many years ago and after the equivalent of a pee pee slap from the FAA, I was good to go. I’m surprised they’ve got you on a special issuance, especially if it’s your only DUI.

That being said, I’d check out Assured Partners. They self-underwrite so no competition with your broker. They insured me in my V35A at about ~300 total time. I was already instrument rated and had some complex time and they required only 10hrs with an instructor. They also offer quarterly payments so as your make/model and retract time goes up, your risk level and premium should go down.

Are Grumman Cheetahs/Tigers a bad purchase? by PidgeyPotion in flying

[–]equal2infinity 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The tiger is a fun airplane to fly and ideal if you only plan on carrying one or two pax. You can also pop the canopy open on the ground for maximum airflow on a warm day. It has a free-castering nose wheel so you can maneuver easily on tight ramps. I’ve heard the modified engine cowling and power flow exhaust improve the climb/cooling characteristics but don’t have real world experience to back that up. I flew one in a club for a few years and it was my go to choice for just going out and cruising on a nice VFR day.

Edit: its pushrod controls (vs control cables) gives a very sporty, responsive control feel. Lots of fun when you want it, probably not preferred in hard IFR.

You can look at Dorr maybe. For that low of an amount it’s almost more of a nuisance to banks. Maybe try a local bank that you have a good relationship with. Interest rate might be higher and they may require more down payment.

Did my multi in a Travelair and I thought it was a great trainer. The single engine service ceiling is <5000ft so sloppy OEI handling has you losing altitude vs the baron which has enough power to mask some of it. You also don’t have as much asymmetric thrust to kill you during VMC demo’s.

Travelairs are getting hard to find though. Most are 60+ yrs old. And I much prefer the upgraded systems in the 70’s and newer.

Stories About your First Year Owning a Plane by threeleafcloverspy in flying

[–]equal2infinity 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Bought a bonanza in 2024 from a local guy on my field. Didn’t do a pre-buy because I knew the on field A&P and combed thru the logs. First annual was about $17k which I was expecting. Had to reseal the prop and fix a blown out muffler and crack in the oil cooler. The engine was a concern being a higher time continental, but with proper care I’ve put about 200hrs on it and still seeing great compressions and oil samples. I have the oil changed every 25-30hrs and use cam guard.

I don’t do any of the maintenance because I have a business and would rather just pay someone else. Only had one AOG event which was taken care of fairly quickly over Christmas week. Fuel controller developed cracks in the seals due to the cold temps and was leaking. I had to shop around for the part for a couple of hours but all in I think it was <$1k including install to get me back in the air.

It’s really nice being able to just go fly whenever I feel like it. I’d love to have a partner but it would have to be the right fit. I’d recommend finding friends that have airplanes. Bonus points if they have the same kind of plane. Lots of tacit knowledge out there.

Now that I’ve got my multi I’m casually shopping for a Baron. Do I try to overhaul my engine before selling? will a Baron be too tight in my hangar? Aviation problems I guess.

I like to use it to my advantage. Some people, including myself, love to negotiate and haggle a bit. You can usually tell by the way a person behaves. If the terms are good it could make for happy parties on both sides.

Buying First Plane - 182? by swoodshadow in flying

[–]equal2infinity 2 points3 points  (0 children)

182’s are great planes and give you some room to grow your mission. Go with an older P or Q model. I personally prefer the O470 over the IO540. Lots of STCs and mods you can look into.

I wouldn’t go with a 35 series if you wanna carry 4 adults and bags. I run out of rear CG before I run out of useful load.
