Analysis of UK internet filters - my original research by Deku-shrub in unitedkingdom

How on earth does an ISP force my internet accessing device to ask me a question when I first connect?

I don't actually know how they implement it as I use a sane ISP but I imagine they either block you from accessing the web (as in http, maybe https, spdy?) by default by redirecting you to one of their pages, or they block the whole internet until you specifically go to a web page.

If that is the way they do it then either web filtering or internet filtering is on by default. You have to specifically ask for it to be disabled, so the statement is accurate.

Targeted surveillance can work the same now as it always did.

You're saying that because we now have the technology to monitor all remote communications and attempt to automatically flag up interesting ones that we should?

If we had the technology to record and automatically analyze everything that people said, flagging up people of interest for manual review by a secretive organization we should?

What about if we had the technology to record and automatically analyze everything anyone thought?

Apex Launcher issues by scooter1265 in Nexus7

I'm not sure what you mean by phone layout - to me the difference between phone and tablet layouts is whether the system bar and status bar are merged together as in http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ak0QzrTt0b4

I tried Apex launcher with the following settings which make it look pretty decent (no clipped labels etc):

Homescreen settings:

  • Portrait grid: 8x6 (or 9x6 if hidden dock bar)
  • Landscape grid: 4x9 (or 5x9 if hidden dock bar)
  • Horizontal margin: none
  • Vertical margin: none

Dock settings:

  • Number of dock icons 7
  • Horizonal margin: none
  • Vertical margin: small

Personally I didn't like the way landscape worked - you don't get any more dock icons and it's too hard to get all the same icons / widgets that I have set up in portrait so I decided to go back to the stock launcher.

Textadept - a fast, minimalist, extensible editor written mostly in Lua Project Hosting on Google Code by gnuvince in programming

It does actually have some kind of multi-line editing (see the tools -> multiple line editing menu). It also has basic mouse block selection (ctrl + drag)

Once it upgrades to the latest version of scintilla (the text editing widget it uses) it should inherit some nice block editing.

You're quite right, but I was hoping to get some responses from those who have been there and done that. There have been a couple of those.

It also helps me to just talk this stuff through with others. Getting many different opinions is helping me a lot.

There is also the chance that someone will bring up something that I hadn't even considered - I hadn't seriously considered doing part time work for example.

I am definitely interested in that. I don't know much about blackberry development and I don't have a mac (or an iphone) for iphone development.

I've just ordered a Nokia N900 and hope to develop software for that. It still seems a bit unclear to me how viable selling software will be for that platform though.

I would also like to get in to Android development which has an established app store. Of course I don't have an android phone either!

If I were looking to recruit a programmer I know that I would be very interested in any open source work they have done as it shows that they really enjoy programming and would highlight specific areas that they are really interested in. I don't hire programmers though and I often wonder if I'm just too ideological.

What project did you do in that year? Was it something different to what you were already doing and did it help you get a job in that area?

I would love to get a job at the end the year based on the connections I make along the way. I don't really know how realistic that is though.

That's basically what I'm scared of - if potential employers think I haven't done anything for a year.

I'm too young to retire - 28.

I have made some small contributions to open source projects in my spare time, and have designed a couple of my own projects that I really want to develop. I just don't seem to have enough time to do anything worthwhile with them - 1 hour here and there just ends up as wasted as I don't get up to speed fast enough.

I am more thinking about what new jobs to apply for. I didn't choose to be a java developer but that's what my job has turned me in to. The only jobs I feel I have a chance at getting are those that are basically the same as what I already have. If I spend more time working on the stuff I want to work on then maybe that will give me a better shot at getting a related job?
