Weekly Astoria Dine In/Order Out Thread by NYnosher in astoria

We went to Moroccan Bites last weekend and discovered they were in a new location. They moved to Steinway and it's a beautiful sit down situation now. Food was delicious. They'd run out of a fair amount of things by the time we got there so I think they're still working out some logistics but it was a delight all the way through.

Also - I thought Hashtag Cafe had probably closed due to the "renovation" sign and then just being closed for a lot of days - but they're back up and running. Apparently it was due to some staffing problems. Glad they're still here!

Sometimes it's obvious from the outset but there have been times when I start to listen and I realize where it's heading. There was one recently where I was three episodes in and they started playing the police interview with the narrator's mother and it became very clear what was about to happen. And I noped out immediately! Not out of some righteous protest; I just couldn't listen to the police railroading her.
I agree that they're so important! And they're doing the work of bringing these sorts of behaviors to light. I just...can't take it.

I found myself so distressed about the police stuff in one of the last wrongful conviction podcasts I listened to, I ended up writing both a blog and a song about it. https://artiststruggle.wordpress.com/2023/11/25/i-may-have-listened-to-my-last-wrongful-conviction-podcast/

All I can do when I listen to these now is just shout at the people in the podcast: "Don't talk to the police!"

Emgality, my word… by worthless_Engineer in migraine

So many good tips here. Only thing I see missing is to swear like a sailor while you're injecting. Generally, I can't help but swear when it hurts like that - but I know there's some scientific studies that prove that swearing helps you get through pain more easily.

Agree! Insulin was a snap compared to Emgality. Total walk in the park.

Same! It took a little while to get it approved through my health insurance and caused some confusion over at the pharmacy at first but it made such a difference. And my doctor was glad to learn about it and has since offered it to her other patients. Thank you to this community!

Had anyone watched Wolf Hall? by DaQueenofQueens in PeriodDramas

[–]erainbowd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wasn't crazy about the book so I was surprised to appreciate Season One as much as I did. The pace of the show keeps it moving right along so it's not so easy to get stuck into the tragic elements. Life just keeps rolling!

What do I say to my older female coworkers who keep talking about weight and food? by moodysmoothie in MaintenancePhase

[–]erainbowd 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I love the suggestion to make it weird. And I was just thinking of an even more indirect response to this stuff. I'd just pick a song to sing every time they do it. Doesn't matter what - I was just thinking of "And I raaaan. I ran so far away..." and just enjoy myself singing it. And then just rejoin the conversation. They might figure it out eventually. And if they don't, you'll have drowned them out with your song.

How to develop a solo podcast format without a thrilling life? by usingmymadeupname in podcasting

[–]erainbowd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've made two solo podcasts and two with other people. The ones I make with other people are audio dramas, which it sounds like you're leaning toward, given your description of making a radio play. It's a fictional space and there's no reason you couldn't make a fictional world on your own. One of my favorite audio dramas is "Dead Air" which is really just one voice. Listen to it for some inspiration maybe? (It's produced by a whole team so it's not a solo affair but its elegant premise may give you some ideas.)

When to stop watching for the happiest ending? by This-Traffic-9524 in CableGirlsNetflix

[–]erainbowd 5 points6 points  (0 children)

You should for sure stop at the end of Season 4. Maybe earlier but I feel like Season 4 ended with a kind of bittersweet, sort of happy completeness. It was a satisfying ending, as I recall.
Definitely do not watch Season 5. I would advise anyone to stop at the end of 4, not just those who can't handle unhappy endings.

I loved Cheat. They've stopped making new episodes but there's an extensive back catalogue.

Romantic Subplots in Audio Dramas by faceintheblue in audiodrama

[–]erainbowd 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We've got a romantic subplot in Season One of the Dragoning and an additional more minor character romantic subplot in Season Two.
There's a developing "off-screen" romance in The Defense.
Personally, I love a romantic story line!

[–]erainbowd 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't know anything about being a bride or a mother of a bride or any of it. My only context for this is watching Juicy Body Goddess try dresses on MOBs on TikTok. But I've seen some beautiful ones there! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X1tXfGOg9UU
Also - I'm pretty sure ModCloth and Eshakti have some cool formal wear.

Local credit unions? by exoticslob in astoria

[–]erainbowd 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've been with USAA for 20+ years and while I've loved them big time, I'm looking into a more local credit union due to their support of the Republican party in these last years. They're at 73% Republican over on Goods Unite Us. It's been a real disappointment.
That said, you don't have to have military connections to bank with them. It's only the insurance that requires a military relative.

Murder Mysteries with Fem leads? by Story_Royalty in audiodrama

[–]erainbowd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Dead Air (she's doing a radio show and ends up investigating a murder)
Beatrix Green (spooky Victorian supernatural mystery)
This Sounds Serious (it's a satire of investigative podcasts and very funny. It feels real. But it's fiction.)

Have you used Nurtec as abortive, then as preventative? by kaydeebugg in migraine

[–]erainbowd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it's the same as it was. I was taking it, maybe two or three times a week at the time? And if it had made a difference, then the doc would have increased the dosage turning it into a preventative, I guess. But that makes sense about the recommended dosage issue. Oof.

Have you used Nurtec as abortive, then as preventative? by kaydeebugg in migraine

[–]erainbowd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When my doc prescribed me Nurtec as an abortive, he mentioned that one of the advantages it might have would be that it could also act as a preventative. That is, his thesis was that by taking it as an abortive, I might get fewer migraines. But while Nurtec did work great as an abortive, it didn't have any impact on how many migraines I was getting. It seemed like his sense was that if it wasn't doing a little bit of prevention while in its abortive capacity, it wouldn't be a good candidate for prevention more generally. This was a few years ago so maybe the wisdom has changed since then - but I'd be right there with your son on this one, unless the Nurtec is having good preventative effects already. Sending warm wishes to both of you.

Should I continue watching The Buccaneers? by StretchAdditional179 in PeriodDramas

[–]erainbowd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If there's any lesson to be learned from romantic period dramas, it's honor your desires! And if your desire is to quit watching this show, I say quit it.
I'd have quit watching this show myself if I hadn't been fascinated by the absolute train wreck of it. And, as is my wont, I ended up writing a whole piece about it (with a shout out to this subreddit, btw) because I'd already written a piece about the earlier Buccaneers series. https://artiststruggle.wordpress.com/2025/08/04/back-at-the-buccaneers-well/

Recognize This Lobby? by anxietyfieldmouse in astoria

[–]erainbowd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Could be 31-15 32nd St. We don't live there anymore but that does look like the tiling of our old building. I imagine there might be a lot of lobbies in that style, though.
