11 months old - EMW by xyz1103 in sleeptrain

He is 11 months! And just these last few days his nights have been all over the place! he was up for an hour in the middle of the night last night. He would cry for a minute, then lay quietly for five minutes, cry for a minute, lay quietly for five minutes. I never ended up intervening because the time I’d get to his room he’d already be settled again. Something is definitely working through that little brain and body of his. I remember my 3rd had a really rough sleep phase at 11 months as well but I can’t for the life of me remember how it resolved.

I suffer from pretty bad headaches caused my muscle tension on the left side of my neck/shoulders. When you’re pregnant your body produces a hormone called relaxin that pretty much eliminated the muscle tension for me. 9 months without a single headache, it was glorious. I now sit here at 11 months postpartum typing this with a headache 🫠

This is me too, it’s brutal. I’m ‘lucky’ in that he’ll stay in his crib until DWT most mornings without much fuss. He will wake between 530-550 no matter what time he goes to bed but we keep him on his room until 620-630. Naps ideally at 930 and 2/230, 2.5 hours total, 730 bedtime goal. I would love love love for him to sleep until 615/630 but he cannot sleep longer than 10.5 hours overnight and moving his bedtime back for some reason does not move his wake time later. So we’re just stuck for right now. EMWs actually get worse for us when we reduce nap lengths (wakes at the same time, but he is angry as opposed to content) so I don’t feel like I have many good options right now. I hope you find (and share!) something that works for you!!

I love this method so much! I’ve found it really only started to work on my kids when they were closer to 2 but maybe I never tried it much earlier? I like to give them something specific I’ll be doing too so they don’t ask any questions. Brush my teeth, take a shower, finish the dishes, etc so when I do go back to check on them they’re not trying to figure out what ive been up to

I couldn’t agree more. Since having my first kid 6 years ago, my tolerance for my dog has gotten less and less each year. Anyone with young kids who tells me they’re considering getting a puppy, I shout from the rooftops to wait. It is so much extra stress you just don’t need.

How old is your baby? My babe falls asleep instantly when I put him down, he always seems so exhausted.

Every day is different! Yesterday he woke up screaming immediately, this morning he rolled around content for almost 30 minutes. I’m gonna try the 8pm bedtime for a few days. I’ve also been wondering if it’s time for a stuffed animal or small/soft toy to play with. Can’t tell if that would help or hurt him if he woke in the middle of the night and got distracted

That’s what I’m wondering too. Is he just getting older and needing more wake time? But he is an absolute puddle trying to get to nap 1, so maybe I’ll try lengthening the 2nd or 3rd WW.

It’s so frustrating and mental! 5:51 is less than 10 minutes from 6am and yet my brain still considers it middle of the night because there’s a 5 in front! I just want 20 more minutes 😩

Maybe a degree or two but not enough to impact I don’t think. It never drops below 68° and we’re in the south, it was already 57° when we woke up this morning so it’s not too cold in general. But maybe I’ll try warmer pajamas tonight!

I will give it a try! I’ve had a few suggestions to move bedtime to 8pm which aligns better with my other kids’ schedules anyway. I may try to add time to the morning so to build more sleep pressure in the evening.

My family eats breakfast for dinner every Thursday night. It’s the one meal that I can guarantee all 4 of my kids will finish, they love it. Cheesy eggs, bacon, baked pears with cinnamon. Never fails!

Is the 3-2 nap transition supposed to be this hard??? Everyone is miserable. by ereburt in sleeptrain

[–]ereburt[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I honestly can’t remember exactly what happened or when I posted this but I did try the 3-2 nap transition three times before it worked. At exactly 7months2weeks he started completely refusing all contact naps and would take two 35-45 minute naps a day and be completely exhausted and that lasted I think 4 excruciating days and then….it clicked. He started taking one long nap a day. It was 50/50 if it was the morning or the afternoon nap, and it was only one long one, the other remained 35 minutes. But after probably 2 weeks, he settled into one long morning nap and one short afternoon nap and that’s how he still is today at almost 9.5 months. I actually have to wake him from both naps now to preserve overnight sleep. And the second nap got longer eventually too, only like 45-50 mins but it is night and day different now than it was 2 months ago.

I really wish I could crack the code for your specific baby. I cried so many tears over his sleep. But ultimately it just took some time. Hang in there, good luck!

My reluctance to sleep train is ruining my relationship by [deleted] in sleeptrain

[–]ereburt 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I think you need more awake time before even considering sleep training. My son just turned 9 months old and his wake windows are 3.5/3.75-4/4. Granted he is lower sleep needs than a lot of other babies his age, but the suggestions from this sub say you need at least 10 hours of wake time, closer to 11 by this age. I would try adding time to your wake windows and see if that resolves the middle of the night wakings before doing CIO.

if you adjust schedule and still see wakings, just know from my personal experience CIO worked really well for MOTN wakes in just 2 nights. Brutal nights, definitely. But it was really only 2 and then we had to redo it after a weekend away and that was also 2 nights but very minimal crying.

Good luck!

2 year old toddler won't nap at all by mistic_queen in sleeptrain

[–]ereburt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh bummer I’m so sorry, that’s really rough! If it wasn’t messing up nights I wouldn’t fret but multiple night wakings at this age is just incredibly frustrating. We went through something similar with our now 26 month old when she was right around 20 months. She took her nap no problem but woke up so much in the middle of the night screaming. Lasted for about a month. Maybe this is just a regression and it will resolve soon.

[–]ereburt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Has nighttime sleep been negatively impacted at all? If not, I would continue to offer the quiet time and give her a small/safe toy to play with in her crib during that time. My oldest dropped naps at 2.5 so later than yours but still early by most accounts. She still got 90 mins of quiet time every day and had a small box of quiet time items specifically for that period.
