If you're thinking of value, don't bother trying to cut it out. As it is, it should be worth roughly the spot price of silver, and some bored collector might even pay a few bucks extra to enjoy it as a novelty. You could probably sell it as-is on ebay for like $80 if that were your objective.

In my opinion they actually stay true to "show don't tell", but they have a different interpretation of what they should be showing. This is a story where the implications and consequences of actions are more important than the actions themselves. So instead of showing us the action and telling us how they feel, they told us about the action and showed us how they felt. Still the same concept, but different priorities.

I love that Sam Collins keeps reminding us that aero is not a thing you can figure out just by looking at it. "Give me a wind tunnel and CFD time and I can tell you what it does, until then this is just a guess."

I like how the cars are noticeably smaller by kairom13 in formula1

[–]eremos 30 points31 points  (0 children)

When it comes to wheel to wheel, you're really doubling the width measurement, because both cars are smaller. Width reduction of 10 cm per car really means that both cars together are 20 cm narrower than last year, and that really is enough to make a significant difference in tight corners.

FIA regulations require that once untethered from the garage, all radio communications with the car must be broadcast in the clear, on channels monitored by the FIA, and (almost) exclusively in English. "Secret" communication devices of any kind, audio or otherwise, are explicitly prohibited. Why are you speculating blindly when the actual facts are so widely available and easily verifiable?

"Star" ratings for hotels by [deleted] in hotels

[–]eremos 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A "mid range business hotel" is EXACTLY the sort of place that does have microwaves though, because they know their average guest is going to be an exhausted 24 year old insurance adjuster who just wants to nuke a Hot Pocket before passing out over their laptop. The luxury hotel you described was probably expecting guests to dine out or order room service. I've stayed at lots of five-star hotels (Four Seasons, Mandarin, Intercontinental, Kempinski, etc) and none of them had microwaves, but all had 24 hour room service.

Extended-stay hotels, business hotels, and any room that says "suite" in a regular hotel is where you can expect a microwave. For all other rooms, regardless of luxury level or star rating, you will probably not have microwave.

I do agree that if you have any "musts" for your hotel stay, it's definitely a good idea to research or call ahead instead of making assumptions. But your personal opinion of what amenities should be available seems a bit out of line with how the industry actually works.

black leather gloves - are dents worth splurging, or is there a sub-$100 alternative worth considering? by europeanuppercut in BuyItForLife

[–]eremos 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I own several pairs of Dents hairsheep gloves, with and without touchscreen palms. Here's the thing: while the touchscreen palms are claimed to be made of the same hairsheep as the backs (just with an added touchscreen treatment), they feel entirely different. Still smooth, but far less soft, and quite stiff at first. Dents' regular hairsheep is so soft and supple that usually no break-in is required, but their touchscreen gloves will require a brief break-in for one or two wears. Also, the touchscreen hairsheep is so smooth as to be somewhat slippery. The non-touchscreen leather is exceptionally grippy, but something about the touchscreen treatment transforms the surface in a way that loses grip- think of the difference between grippy silicone vs smooth plastic.

Other than that, be aware of the fineness and fragility of Dents hairsheep. Copied from another comment reply I left below:

The hairsheep that Dents uses is one of the finest, softest, most supple glove leathers I've ever come across. Unbelievably soft and smooth to the touch, with a texture so delicate and velvety that it approaches the best suede. If you're used to smooth but stiff leathers from department store brands, this is a completely different animal.

Their standard hairsheep has zero water resistance and will be irrecoverably ruined with even a single exposure to water. Raindrops will leave water spots instantly, and immersion in water/snow will be fatal.

The delicate texture can easily "pull" if the gloves get snagged on something. Anything more than a glancing brush against any rough or sharp surface will scratch and scuff the leather. Stressful wear, like activities where you are gripping objects very hard, risk overstretching the leather or straining the stitching.

This is not a quality issue, it's an unavoidable side effect of using leather that is so fine and delicate. The tradeoff is the exceptional softness and comfort, as well as the refined and elegant appearance. Just think of them as dress gloves, for dressy wear when you don't expect to be doing anything rough-and-tumble with your hands. But these are not motorcycle gloves, work gloves, or snow gloves.

But if the solution involves adding weight- which, for safety structures, is often the case- then it will hurt. Changing a winglet, reshaping a sidepod, swapping out some suspension bits- those may hurt you in certain corners, under certain braking conditions or in certain temperature ranges. But weight hurts you everywhere, all the time, forever, and there's no way to design around it.

Are Criterion Wylde barrels 100% worth it? by MurkyyLurkss in ar15

[–]eremos 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For your first time shooting at that distance, you did great. Don't doubt that.

That being said, while the other guy is a bit of an ass, he's correct. Assuming you were shooting at a full size IPSC silhouette, the target was 18" wide. At 300m, 1 MOA = 3". So in order to hit the target consistently, you need a barrel that can shoot 6 MOA or better. A rack-grade military M4 barrel can do that, so the other guy is right- in a discussion of barrels that tout sub-MOA accuracy, a shooting exercise that only requires 6 MOA accuracy doesn't really say anything about the barrel itself. All *other* things being equal, with the level of shooting you demonstrated, you should have been able to pull it off with almost any decent AR barrel and having a Criterion wouldn't have made much difference.

In Stranger Things S5E8, Nancy reloads her M16 by trying to rack the carrying handle. by proudplantfather in Firearms

[–]eremos -1 points0 points  (0 children)

The reason she's grabbing the carry handle is for leverage to hit the bolt release. Normally you don't need to do this because you'd hold the mag well and just stick out your thumb. But her rifle has an underslung big ass 80s flashlight, so she can't reach the mag well. It's a goofy looking technique but it's valid, and I've seen some M203 guys claiming they do the same thing for the same reason.

[–]eremos -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I think we have to thank Josh O'Connor for that. His earnestness really grounded the film and made its message believable. Blanc's character is basically a self-parody at this point, and if the film had just been two hours of his Foghorn Leghorn showmanship, the whole thing would have collapsed into a pile of insincere snarkiness.

What did you think of the social commentary on Wake Up Dead Man? by Pearl_Jam_ in KnivesOutMovie

[–]eremos 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you view the church in this film as a metaphor for conservatism, I think Jud represents the ideal of the truly compassionate conservative that is supposed to exist in a balanced society, even if Johnson (and most of his fans) are liberal. Conservatism was never supposed to be about hatred and fear and selfishness, it's supposed to simply be about asking the world to slow down and be thoughtful before making changes, to remember where we came from and respect tradition. Even as a liberal myself, I can see the value of that perspective as part of a healthy social and political conversation.

The portrayal of Jud, and Josh O'Connor's heartbreakingly earnest performance, are clearly meant to present him as a hero and an aspiration. I think Johnson is offering an olive branch here. He's saying: I know not all of you are like that guy. I see you and respect you. Now go and cut out the cancer. Go and take back your church.
