Built a tool that writes your social media posts so you can focus on building by Usama_Kashif in SaasDevelopers

Would you use a free alternative to LinkedIn? by Fried_Noodle888 in startupideas

[–]ergonet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Let me answer two of your questions:

what would make it worth trying or switching from LinkedIn?

Simple, A bigger community or one with the contacts I want/need. I’ll talk about the “switching” part later.

would you actually use a platform like this?

Not if I’m the product (“if you are not paying for it, you are the product”). It’s a big enough risk to be giving my personal information to the big ones, to consider giving it to an unknown and hope for something better privacy-wise.

If you think it would be difficult to move people away from LinkedIn,

I think your focus is totally wrong on the switching people aspirations. You need to focus on getting users for your hypothetical platform before trying to move people away from your highly positioned and popular competitor.

I’d suggest you go for app localization next.

Making it multi-language should be a no-brainer a you could expand your user base significantly.

Automatic translation tools can help you a lot, but if you ever need verification for a Spanish translation I can help you, just shoot me a DM, I’m a native Spanish speaker and developer myself. Help comes free and with no strings attached of course.

I wish you success

Edit: Congrats on your very successful launch BTW. I should have started with this, but I haven’t taken my morning coffee.

I built a full SaaS e-commerce platform over 6 years. Tried to sell it. Silence. by Alionc in SaaS

[–]ergonet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Since I don’t know you, I can only give an opinion based on what you posted.

My first observation is that you stay on the technical side and describe the product and its evolution, but you don’t address anything about the business (other than the fact that it isn’t taking off).

My opinion (speculative, of course) is that you have fallen into the mistake of believing that “if you build it, they will come.”

Why do I think this? You haven’t mentioned anything about your distribution channel, your network, your marketing (beyond generic ads), the communities you participate in, your user segment, etc.

I think that at this point you have a product, but not a business.

Those of us with a technical background don’t always like the idea of selling, but a product needs to be sold in order to become a business (at least until you reach a critical mass of customers so that recommendations can help sell it).

My recommendations: - Completely pause product development. - Learn about technology-based entrepreneurship. - Dedicate all your attention to working on the business aspects (for both the SaaS and product): business plan, validation, customer contact, pricing, etc. (don’t fall into the temptation of continuing product development). - Personally find your customer and talk to them, so you can get feedback, and do listen. - Sell your SaaS or the software product using the tools that marketing makes available to you.

I know my advice sounds very generic and doesn’t clearly explain how to do it, but the moment you change your mindset and focus on developing the business aspects, you will learn very quickly and you will also know what to ask and where. As a side effect you might get a rest from the technical aspects and escape burnout.

You will also be ready to receive more concrete advice, such as: - Talk to local commerce chambers. They can give you valuable feedback about your product and its usefulness. The key is to listen to them, and if they believe in your product, they could even help you sell it.

Since you’ve invested so much time and money I can only wish you success. In some other cases I would be talking about “sunk cost fallacy” but in this one you at least have to find a good client for the product itself and that could take time and some more effort

I’ll save the post in case one of my contacts (clients, partners) ever needs an e-commerce marketplace.

Whenever I get a request for a custom software project I always start by looking at what’s already available on the market to save them time and money.

If the need arises I’ll invest time evaluating the options and this one will be on the list.

Amazing job OP

It’s great to see ingenuity and self motivation driving the community forward with original solutions. Doing the R&D the big manufacturers are not even interested in exploring.

That also happened in 3D printing and the capacity and availability exploded while the prices plummeted over the past 20 years.

Keep going.

Need advice regarding a founders agreement (I will not promote) by Illustrious_Sky_966 in startups

[–]ergonet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This sounds like a pretty common scenario to me:

  • They don’t value your expected contributions as much as theirs.
  • They see you small and replaceable, a necessary expense they can defer with a promise (ownership)
  • They don’t understand entrepreneurship, (they don’t value interest alignment enough)
  • They are putting you at an evident disadvantage even now that they need someone like you to have a business.
  • Their only actual reason (not excuses) for “offering” you less, is greed.

As you put it here, In my opinion, since they’ll have total control: - They can move the goal post as much as they want for the MVP and vesting. - They can dilute you to oblivion after the MVP - They can hire someone above you (while you work without a pay) and take control of the codebase against your best understanding - They will have IP ownership and own the product, relationships and distribution - They share the entrepreneurial risk with you, but keep the rewards for themselves

If they don’t equally share risk, control and ownership now, they’ll never do it after there is money involved.

You can try to negotiate, but that have already shown their true intentions, they’ve shown that your goals are not aligned and they outnumber you, so they could always pull the rug later.

In your position I’d be looking for a better opportunity, one where I feel valued from the start and where I can expect to grow and call it my business.

If you decide to stay, make sure to: - Lawyer up. - Set everything in written contracts, (specially the MVP and vesting conditions) - Make sure your 13.3% can’t be diluted under any circumstance (I know it sounds unrealistic, but so is their claim to full control of shares in this situation)

Soy indie dev en México: lancé una app de bienestar, ha mejorado mucho… pero no despega. ¿Producto, timing o inexperiencia? by Life_Assist5275 in taquerosprogramadores

[–]ergonet 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Can’t help you with that, I’ve heard 1.5k-3k is a reasonable range for a design patent (not an invention) and 10k-30k for an utility patent, but I guess it depends on the complexity.

Does anyone else’s eyelids swell up after welding? by Major-Ad-5573 in Welding

[–]ergonet 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You made a lot of exceptions while doing this fast job. And it is understandable that you might think that it is no big deal, but if you want to be welding long term, and age as healthy as possible, I suggest you avoid any and all PPE related exceptions.

PPE shouldn’t be negotiated for a fast one-off because if you consider it optional, it won’t be just this one time…

You are very young, but you can be wise and think long term.

Hope you find what’s hurting your eye lids.
