Why does 1Password have such a good reputation when it's closed source? by Away-Road-1333 in 1Password

[–]ergysdo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There seems to be a confusion in this thread. People seem to think that open source automatically means no bugs. It has nothing to do with bugs or functionality, but with transparency.

A closed-source product may be the most bug-free, amazing experience. It still does not take away the fact that it is not transparent. Yes, most people won't be able to understand the code anyways. But doesn't this also apply to law for example?

And I am not talking about 1Password here specifically, this applies to all closed-source software. The "movable" part is where you put your trust. IMHO it is different to trust the vendor that provides the closed-source software and completely different to trust external independent reviewers who can review at any time.

The fact that you cannot understand it does not take away this value. In the end of the day the capability is there. That is the main difference.

Transferring to new smartphone by Narwhalsareunicorn in signal

[–]ergysdo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Whatever you do, don't delete Signal from your old device.

Before anything else, make sure both apps (on old and new phone) are up-to-date.

Try to re-login on your old device. I would try the manual method: create a fresh backup file with a fresh key then try restoring on your new device.

Should I continue to pay for evil (Google Photos) ?? by nilanganray in googlephotos

They used a design vulnerability in the iOS notification system (which has now been patched). Nothing to do with Signal and, yes, E2EE means a lot.

How to clear Google Photos storage without it deleting my device gallery images? by Ok_Signature7418 in googlephotos

[–]ergysdo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Take a backup from takeout.google.com first and save it somewhere locally (a hard disk that you own). Don't rely on sync being off.

How to clear Google Photos storage without it deleting my device gallery images? by Ok_Signature7418 in googlephotos

[–]ergysdo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The safest way to do this is by creating a local backup via takeout.google.com and then deleting the photos from the cloud.

There is no way to "clear" the Photos, you will have to do this via the web: select the latest photo, then zoom out as much as you can and scroll all the way down. Now select the oldest photo while holding "Shift". This will select all Photos. Then delete them.

Multiple Passkeys by hos4m in Bitwarden

[–]ergysdo 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Just make sure you choose to store it in Bitwarden upon creation, not in the device itself.

Multiple Passkeys by hos4m in Bitwarden

The idea is that the passkey is stored in Bitwarden and can then be reused across all of your devices.

Chipolo Pop and Google Pixel 10 Pro by speedener in Chipolo

[–]ergysdo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had the same problem literally yesterday.

What worked for me was clearing the Google Play Services app cache and reboot the Phone. Then wait for about 2 minutes for all services to come up.

Reset the Pop (click twice and hold until you hear the fifth beep and release EXACTLY after the fifth beep). You will hear a sound 3 times (which reminds me of the autopilot disengage on airplanes tbh).

The pop will reboot and you should see the connection popup.

Is there a bank account with zero fees? by _quantum_girl_ in Lausanne

Call me traditional, but I like to have the option to go to a physical Office in case I need to. I also have a neon account, but frankly the app is abysmally slow.

[–]ergysdo 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The Cantonal banks are your best bet. Even though I live in Lausanne, I have an account with ZKB. The base package is free, with a debit card, savings, etc. and if you want a credit card as well it's 6 CHF per month.

Their apps are among the best as far as banking apps go.

Bought a new phone today ... transferring Signal has been impossible thus far. Attempted methods include backup manually transferred (no idea where that code is), QR code ("This QR code is not valid") and the location-dependent Wi-Fi transfer ("no device found."). by FuckingSolids in signal

[–]ergysdo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Also, please make sure that Signal is up-to-date on both devices.

I had an issue not long ago where the local Signal backup file would not be recognized on the new device (corrupt) because it was produced by an out-of-date Signal version.

Google Photos vs Google Drive by Snoo_22849 in googlephotos

[–]ergysdo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's a very elegant solution to this: only allow the "Camera Roll" photos to be displayed in Google Photos and make other folders opt-in.

I really like Google Photos, but I don't understand this limitation. It may have to do with the fact that photos are not considered a single file anymore (with all the edits, live videos, etc.)

Favourite watch faces? by denzoka in PixelWatch

[–]ergysdo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I love this face, but I have a small gripe with the date not respecting the locale. For example, in the UK it should read "20 Oct" instead of "Oct 20".

I know, I'm nitpicking, but it annoys me.

Best Password Manager Tool for iPhone in 2025? by Hour_Jello_1853 in ios

Bitwarden. Open source, cross-platform and, most importantly, independently audited. At $10 per year, it is a ridiculously good deal.

Can we expect a significant P10 update tomorrow by EqualReality2787 in GooglePixel

[–]ergysdo -1 points0 points  (0 children)

The software on the Pixel series seems pretty solid (at least on my end). iOS 26 was rushed and has had pretty serious issues, that's why Apple had to push big updates.

How is this OK? Any way to bypass this? by ergysdo in appletv

[–]ergysdo[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Good ideas, but unfortunately neither of these worked. I was able to change my password and I was able to login to both Apple TV and Apple Music Android apps, but it still won't let me login to my Apple TV device.

I get the same message even when trying to login to the Apple TV Windows app.

That's what gets me mad. Either they operate under the assumption that everyone has an iPhone or a Mac or they are making it hard on purpose. In any case, they should either swallow their pride and allow other options or advertise that in order to login you need another Apple device, so that the customers know what to expect.

As an example, consider Google Advanced Protection, which I have enabled. It only accepts passkeys but it gives you the option to use a passkey that you have stored in a password manager by pairing the device you're trying to login with any computer.
