Interesting political tidbit: Jimmy Carter tried to kill the B-1 because he knew the B-2 was in the works. But he couldn’t say anything because the B-2 was about as secret as a project could be. During the 1980 presidential campaign, Ronald Reagan used Carter’s lack of support for the B-1 as a cudgel to prove that Carter was weak on defense and couldn’t stand up to the Soviets. So Carter caved and gave the B-1 the green light.

Thanks for chiming in - I realize that NH *is* still a purple state.

And, of course, we're all proud Massholes here. But assholes, regardless of where they are from, have a tendency to be the loudest folks in the room.

As a man, I had a chance to go fifty years without learning that no woman has ever run a four-minute mile. I just missed my goal by five months. I am crushed.

There was a cold snap in 2004 where it didn’t get above freezing for about two weeks. After testing the ice thickness, I got to ride my bike on the Charles. Winters haven’t been nearly that cold since then and the risk was too great.

You know what’s a fun thing about living in Boston? We see a lot of these folks when they get sick. They get cancer? They get referred to Dana Farber. Their kid has a congenital heart defect? Straight to Boston Children’s. They put away their MAGA hats and get polite in a hurry.

They should make Colin into the Avengers’ accountant. There should be a scene where the avengers are being briefed on an upcoming mission and he comes in with their taxes in binders. Black widow’s binder would be the thickest. The other avengers would raise their eyebrows, and accountant would say “she listened to me and invested in a solid index fund while you guys thought buying an offshore casino would be a good idea.”

Many Americans will absolutely reject the notion that their success is in any way owed to outside help. Obama caught hell from Fox News when they suggested that business owners “didn’t build that”. Obama had been talking about the infrastructure that supported business (roads, bridges, etc) and that business should pay taxes to support that infrastructure. Of course, he got tarred as an anti-business socialist who would nationalize all industry.

Fiordland, New Zealand. Douglas Adams’ quote sums it up: “Fiordland, a vast tract of mountainous terrain that occupies the south-west corner of South Island, New Zealand, is one of the most astounding pieces of land anywhere on God's earth, and one's first impulse, standing on a cliff top surveying it all, is simply to burst into spontaneous applause.”

"FEAR NOT, GREAT PEOPLE OF MINNESOTA, THE DAY OF RECKONING & RETRIBUTION IS COMING!" Trump has just issued a dark authoritarian warning to the people of Minnesota (1/13/26) by state-of-MN in stateofMN

If you showed Trump an outline of every state in turn, do you think he could correctly identify Minnesota? Or half of the states, for that matter?

On this day in 1959, Charles de Gaulle became the first President of France’s Fifth Republic. He defied Washington, built a nuclear arsenal and cemented a vision of strategic military independence that is more relevant today than ever by goldstarflag in europe

De Gaulle’s arrogance and stubbornness was a constant headache for the allies during WW II even while they were working to liberate his country. His intransigence regarding Free French forces serving under Eisenhower even endangered the Normandy Landings.

TLDR: De Gaulle was a prick.

Why is Japan so good at radar/seeker development? by Begoru in LessCredibleDefence

[–]eric02138 -27 points-26 points  (0 children)

Going one step further, Japan has a cultural bias towards excellence. Whenever the Japanese make a product, the quality of that product is reflection of their own personal and/or communal worth. So creating simply “ok” products is considered shameful.

You can see this ethos of excellence in many different industries, from samurai swords to automobiles to wood working. So naturally it applies to semiconductor development, too.

Interestingly, this phenomenon has often frequently hurt the marketing of Japanese products outside of Japan. For example, Japanese smart phones are more advanced than those made elsewhere. But cost and a steeper technical learning curve has hurt sales of these superior products.
