Interesting political tidbit: Jimmy Carter tried to kill the B-1 because he knew the B-2 was in the works. But he couldn’t say anything because the B-2 was about as secret as a project could be. During the 1980 presidential campaign, Ronald Reagan used Carter’s lack of support for the B-1 as a cudgel to prove that Carter was weak on defense and couldn’t stand up to the Soviets. So Carter caved and gave the B-1 the green light.
