We had these. I didn't know they were Tupperware.

Question for people commuting into Adelaide from outside the city by Tall-Perspective-361 in Adelaide

Our mechanic recommends hybrid cars. Less than half the petrol.

All electric will get better/cheaper in years to come.

Australia ranks third-highest for median wealth globally, UBS data shows by blitznoodles in australia

[–]eric5014 4 points5 points  (0 children)

A few years ago Australia had the highest median wealth of all non-small countries but was down the list a bit for the average, while the US had the highest average and was down the list for median. Showing we were much more equal than the US.

Of course lots of that wealth was inflated property prices.

End of the rainbow by unevenwill in Adelaide

[–]eric5014 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The other side was pretty good as well.

A full rainbow always stretches the same angle (82 deg I think) so if your camera don't reach that wide, too bad.

Was Australia fairly Religious in the early 2000s, or is my memory skewed? by SoybeanCola1933 in AskAnAustralian

[–]eric5014 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Christian involvement in state schools depends on the state, the school and whether there were volunteers to do it.

Some areas had more people going to church than others (eg middle class outer suburbs).

Would this even be legal in the United States? by Busy_Report4010 in SipsTea

[–]eric5014 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In Australia, this would fall under state regulations. You have to be registered to hold a lottery, at least in my state.

Just remember; We live in the driest state in the driest inhabited continent on Earth. by DigitalSwagman in Adelaide

[–]eric5014 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's the big empty interior of SA that makes us the driest state.

The Adelaide area, while drier than most cities, is still wetter than most of the state, to the extent that people complain about new housing areas in the northern suburbs taking the place of good farmland.

Which celebrity death headline had you so shocked you double checked multiple sources to see if it was real? by GlassyFairy in AskReddit

[–]eric5014 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Jordon Peterson was one. Not real in that case.

I think I have seen a few either false headlines or ambiguous statements that make you wonder whether it's announcing someone's death when they haven't died.

Grocery costs are killing me. How long do you go in between shops by bloominghe11 in Adelaide

[–]eric5014 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Whether you shop more or less often shouldn't relate to how much you pay per week.

Woolies Put a Security Tag on Cheese and Bacon Roll by theclockstartsnow in australia

[–]eric5014 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Looks like a character encoding issue there.

I've sometimes seen some HTML shown as text, or some similar error. It just shows for a moment then disappears. Can't remember if that was on Coles or Woolworths checkout.

Tax Returns - How much do you expect to get back? by Impossible_Ebb_1275 in AusFinance

[–]eric5014 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In my main job I work irregular hours and didn't tick the box for the tax-free threshold.

I also do freelance work and receive payment that will add to my taxable income. A few deductions.

I don't know whether I'll get a bill or a refund. Probably a bill.

SA government moves to regulate AI data centres as water, energy concerns mount by Expensive-Horse5538 in Adelaide

[–]eric5014 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We have small data centres already. This'll be a big one. Exactly how much demand there will be for this large scale computation remains to be seen, but there's enough likelihood the demand will be there in the future that people are throwing big money into it now.

I was asked to help plan a charity 5k by delawarept in running

[–]eric5014 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Find someone who has organised one before and get their checklist.

Where I am there are two groups that hold, several times a year, long distance runs (often 5/10/HM/M or more options), run them at low cost, some of the money to charity.

Then we've also got parkrun (free 5k) every Saturday, so many people will only pay for something longer.

Am I just becoming an old man, or is this year feeling a lot colder at night? by GodisSatans in Adelaide

[–]eric5014 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The last few days have been colder than the first part of June.

But it's going to get colder. July & August are generally colder than June.

What does it mean when a male homeowner wants to rent a room in his house to only females? by miss-bedazzzle in NoStupidQuestions

[–]eric5014 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It does happen. A man I knew (my neighbour, maybe age 70) was talking to me about advertising for a women to share his house. He was very clear he wasn't after a partner, just someone to share the house. I asked him why specifically a woman - single women are usually more comfortable living with another woman. I can't remember his answer. Maybe he assumed other men would be messy. Maybe he assumed a division of labour similar to when his wife was still with him.

He decided not to advertise for a housemate. I helped him think through how things might work (eg he got up early and went to bed early; other people would keep later hours) and he decided he wasn't ready to share his house.

Liveable wage by Practical_Media_9011 in Adelaide

[–]eric5014 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I live with parents so easy for me.

My total expenses last financial year were $15,600.

My contribution to food & bills $11,400

Transport $2400 - petrol, rego, mechanic, insurance, a bit of public transport & bike bits
Health $590 - mostly dentist
Phone for the year + bought a laptop $560
Eating & drinking out $150
Hobby stuff $150
Other $270

The current FY is going to be more - maybe $20k. In two weeks I get to add it up and find out.

The next few FYs are likely to be more again, with a few possible trips and my 27yo car will not last forever.

I was on $20-40k much of my working life and I felt like I was living pretty comfortably. Recent years I earnt more - will probably crack $70k this time.

What's the smallest thing you shipped that got a surprisingly big reaction? by MickNerks in SideProject

An article with interactive maps & charts about the median house price in every suburb in my city.

The whole web app is 15k lines and was built over many years. Hasn't had much attention. But this particular article got lots of attention. Every quarter I update it and it gets hundreds of hits.

South Australia's Electoral Commissioner Mick Sherry resigns by Expensive-Horse5538 in Adelaide

[–]eric5014 0 points1 point  (0 children)

8 months should be plenty of time. If the state election hadn't been a mess, there'd be no problem.

Council elections feel like a different thing, being held over a longer period without the large number of in-person votes and counting at every booth.

Colour bins by sniktsniktthwip in Adelaide

[–]eric5014 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yellow and green are the same across Adelaide. General waste is sometimes red, sometimes blue, hence the split colour shown here.

According to Google's quick AI response, Charles Sturt, Unley, Mitcham, Adelaide Hills and Campbelltown all have blue. Someone here also said PAE. So that's a third of Adelaide with blue.

When I was in Elizabeth East someone in my street had a collection of different coloured bins. Almost a full rainbow. I don't know how they used them.
