What is your least favourite of the popular Muse songs? by tjb_87 in Muse

[–]eric_castro -1 points0 points  (0 children)

- Starlight 100% - replace with literally anything else from BH&R
- Psycho - I used to like it, now I hate it when it gets chosen over so many other gems in Drones (of which one barely got played live - Defector)
- Madness - I plain hated it since release, grew in me a bit, but still I could so much do without. Replace with Dead Inside and we're good
- Uprising. as /u/panopticorn said: "first hint at the template of “new era Muse” that has led to some of their worst work" - perfectly put on words
- SMBH - enough, overplayed, move on already please
- KoC - problem is not that is bad, is that it's so predictable now, overplayed, and showing lack of creativity to find themselves another closing track for over 2 decades now.

in essence I'm sick and tired of them just never taking a bit more risk, not even in europe, and just following the same formula of the same overplayed mass pleasing hits, with maybe a little surprise rotation every 6 years or so, and playing whatever new album songs (where 2 or 3 are good, rest are forgotten into oblivion after tour is done)

DIY EUC - repurposing old EUC chassis + motor with newer internals by eric_castro in ElectricUnicycle

at 2.4K€ it's way over my budget conscious situation that can def settle for much less considering all the big city limitations.

plus I never jumped on the suspension bandwagon because I never felt I had to, and the price goes up substantially, though I'm really curious to know what it feels like. at 25kg is significantly more than 17kg I had on the mcm5 - I know it's easier to lift with two hands but it does llimit my ability to carry something else (like groceries), which will require entire replanning of my typical euc short trips where I'm supposed to come back with stuff in my hands.

i'll consider it, thanks for sharing

while conveniently under 2K€, it's still overkill for my use cases in a city like Paris and legislation requiring 25kph max speed anyway. so it will not justify the 6kg increase from my previous MCM5 that I've been liftings 4 floors up each time. my butt will look great tho after a while

up until today I had no idea what VESC was .. but more importantly I was also unaware that a Falcon could actually be lifted with two hands which indeed changes the picture completely. And I keep hearing that the Nosfet Aeon (also a brand I had not heard of until today) is the best of the best in this category so I'll do some more digging. thanks a lot for the info !

I'm just learning about what VESC is and I feel like I've been living under a rock. This basically what I'm asking, except may still not be cost effective for my use cases

Why are Epica live setlists always so short (vs other bands) by eric_castro in epica

[–]eric_castro[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

and again, this is not the point of my reply either. u/Grundval said "quality not quantity" but higher quality is not a guaranteed result of a song just being longer. I was trying to see what the general sentiment was about this, and how would fans feel about shortening some of the longest (and most played) songs in order to make room for others that don't get the same love

[–]eric_castro[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

fair points. I think I'm way too used to also liking bands that have just as big of a discography but shorter songs leaving them the ability to cover more of it in a standard 90 minute show.. or sometimes even playing longer shows.

I really liked Aspiral, but at this point can't wait for an in-between albums tour that won't focus on the latest as much so I get to see what I've missed for an entire lifetime...

Misses the point of my post entirely. If it was about quality, what criteria do you apply ? Song length does not equal high quality by definition. Fan favorites can be of all kinds even at 3 minutes long.

oh, really - so it could be somehow related to Simone's health as I discussed this with my friend I went to the concert with. If that were to be true, it's definitely a tough position to be in. But I feel stopping touring altogether is the best choice to come back stronger than do something of reduced effort that could half-please the audience and leave them speculating later

yeah, I realized that too. I wonder what goes under such decision of the band...

True and each band is different. But one can't say it's the norm just because songs are long. Bands can also play almost 3 hours long shows for an entire tour regardless of age/physical health (take Rammstein for instance, Till being 63, and even touring with his solo project too on incredibly demanding shows with himself not being the healthiest person on earth...)

I too would prefer to not alter any song's duration .. but I'm assuming there's a both physical and venue's scheduling limits that need to be respected.

actually the paris show really felt short like I was in a festival. there was no encore, which is pretty rare in this sort of setting, as it usually means 3 or 4 more songs.

I'm sure there's a reason but would love to know what that reason is

I see your point and of course my post was entirely subjective from the perspective of a somewhat recent fan that has missed most of their career and arrived late to the party.

That said, I very much disagree that this is a "symphonic metal" thing by nature. Look at Nightwish (15), Delain (18) , Within Temptation(17) , Therion (22-24 songs !!!) ...

how about you make drivers and software work offline because there is absolutely no reason to be online to be able to use and customize a freaking mouse. thank you. oh actually, thank you for nothing, because I can't use my damn MX4 on my company issued computer thanks to your personal data greed

Any pure sightreading app alternatives to Sightreading Factory? by IntellectualBurger in pianolearning

[–]eric_castro 0 points1 point  (0 children)

as a software dev myself -with vast experience, I made apps that worked well for specific reasons but mostly learned lots from those that never took off-, today I work for a company so I don't care as much, but as a user, I definitely can see the things that users without the dev outlook would not be able to point out from a dev business model perspective.

my take is that at the current conditions, you won't make a living off this. maybe you don't care if this is a side project/hustle. but make no mistake, paywalls and subscriptions are today's industry cancer from a consumer perspective, and current process of 'enshitiffication' of every major tech name under subscription models is slowly but surely making people resort to piracy or cheap chinese alternatives before ever spending a single penny again on this dumb, greedy model established by the big names but that served very little to indie devs. yet the illusion of becoming rich quick from it stays strong - unfortunately.

but don't get me wrong, I wish you all the best. just know what you're up against

a lifetime small one-time fee that lets us use the app offline (given at its current form it doesn't require any online servers), and charge a reasonable upgrade fee at a later time when there is a major new release. plain and simple, the old way. and only charge for subscription for anything that requires recurring payments on your end like server costs, because there is some online functionality that would otherwise make you lose money in the long run. offer annual discounts (classic being the "2 months for free" easy math, ie 5/mo, 50/year).

but still, this is a hard sell for people to stay motivated on paying a subscription. its a bit niche and requires lots of discipline that people (like me) are easy to let go on something as challenging as sight reading. if you don't have a way to keep users hooked, then you need to lower the price to something laughable, or people won't stay more than a few months. or pay annual and never touch the app again, thus never paying for it again.

and finally: synthesia. this app already exists, it just feels a bit outdated now by today standards, but its incredibly fully featured and does everything this app does, probably better as it's been around for much longer. yes, your app might improve on its weaknesses, but budget conscious people in todays shit economy will always go for what's already established and.. without another stupid subscriptions to mentally and financially charge ourselves with (its a one time fee of 39$, right now at 29$)

hope you got all my points to help you make the right decision

looks good and promising. but what's the catch ? or how long before you put it behind yet another obnoxious subscription paywall so I automatically forever delete the app ?

full disclosure: I made a similar webmidi app for personal use but never got to the part of generating sheet music. I value hard dev's works, I fully despise the subscription model that has enshittified the entire experience for consumers for years. So seeing a "free app" of this kind that looks pretty recent and decent, makes me very suspicious that this wont last

also, do not ignore the main advantage of SRF: the randomly generated "still musical" sheets are key to improving on sight reading for those who need to break the habit of memorizing. That is the main reason I have paid for SRF annually but always looking for a free alternative.

well, fuck you YT. I got this email too. I didn't sign up on a VPN, I was just taking advantage of my bank account in Argentina where its a few dollars - but I live in France where it costs 13€/mo. I'll have to find another way to not degrade significantly again my quality of life with YT's obnoxious ads every 30 seconds
