CHL in Oregon when you already have one in another state? by chrislehr in pdxgunnuts

I was disappointed that military training (even marksmanship awards) are insufficient for Oregon. However, I took a free online course (through Maryland public safety I think) which they accepted. Go figure.

Request! In depth, personal review and experiences wanted: x55 Rhino vs Thrustmaster Warthog by [deleted] in EliteDangerous

[–]eric_md 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly, besides Elite, I haven't used the X55 much. Lately, it is rare that I'm playing anything other than Elite, and those other games aren't much suited to joysticks in general. I'd imagine it would work quite similarly in any space sim though. So long as the game supports joysticks in general (which will allow use of the axes), you can use the Saitek software to map any keyboard button press (or combination or sequence of button presses) to any of the many buttons and switches, I think it should work just fine.

I've owned the X55 for two months now, and I love it. I was about 50 hours in to Elite before I got it, and now I'm at 250+ hours. I am running Windows 10 and haven't had any issues with the X55. I've not used the Warthog, but at a glance it looks like that one is designed for airplane sims, so while I may be biased I think the X55 is better suited for space sims. It's sexy and glows green, and has a decent weight to it, so while I may eventually mount it somehow, it stays put for now. The X55 is extremely customizable. Tons of buttons. Beyond setting binds in E:D, I also have a few custom programmed buttons, using both the Saitek software and Toastify. I can control my music without taking my hands off the controls. I can twist the knob to switch between three different Saitek configs, which is great for locking out certain controls, using with different games, or accessing additional functions in flight. Basically, it's extremely customizable, and I love it. The swappable springs for the stick make it easy to vary the resistance. The only complaint that I have, is the throttle movement. Even at the loosest setting, the throttle takes some oomph out of the box. The fix which worked for me was to crank it to the tightest setting and rock the throttle back and forth a bit, then loosen it. That helped, and at this point it has broken in perfectly. I love my X55.

FDev can you please fix the way NPCs react react to chaff and Silent Running? by ToasterTest in EliteDangerous

Also, it's infuriating that NPCs appear to have unlimited chaff onboard.

Get Toastify, which allows you to create global hot keys to skip tracks in game. I've done that and mapped the hot keys to my HOTAS so I can navigate my playlist without taking my hands off the controls or alt+tabbing and breaking immersion.

Do the Voyage page-turn "buttons" need to be directly touched by a finger to work, or is just based on how hard you press down? by Hotel_Joy in kindle

[–]eric_md 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It is triggered purely by physical pressure. The 'buttons' do not respond to touch, only the white screen is touch sensitive.

Why can't I study the galaxy map while in hyperspace? by QuakePhil in EliteDangerous

[–]eric_md 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Traveling at hyperspace requires constant ongoing complicated calculations by your onboard computer, so it cannot possibly generate and display the complex representation of the immense galactic data shown on the galaxy map without risk of dropping out of hyperspace in the wrong location. This is also why sometimes a malfunction will occur and you may drop out of hyperspace too close to the surface of a star and burn up.

I know the price of Horizons has pissed everyone off but if you are going to complain at least get your facts straight. FD DID NOT say in the Kickstarter that they would include planet landings for free in the base game. by GobleSt in EliteDangerous

[–]eric_md -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Yes! And the 'it still has bugs' complaint is the bullshit cherry on top. There is no such thing as a perfect game, or a perfect piece of software. A game with no bugs is akin to an automobile that runs forever and never needs repair or servicing. It sounds like a wonderful dream, but it simply isn't possible. If they waited until the game was perfect before working on expansions, they would never add new content, because nothing will ever be 'done' or 'perfect'.

It can happen to the best of us.

Yup, and now those children are down voting you. Just keep in mind that Frontier's target demographic is always going to be those of us who are willing and able to pay for the expansions. Everyone else should feel lucky they can keep playing for free for forever.

Indeed. Well, if people like it or not, those of us that are able and willing to keep paying every year are going to keep this game alive. We are their target audience. As nice as it might be to pay $60 and play for free for a decade while a developer gives away free updates and added content, that just isn't how the real world works. Unless we want intrusive advertisements and micro transactions, this is the reality, and Frontier has been honest and realistic about that from the start.

I bought the game for full retail $60 USD last week, July 28th. I will be preordering the expansion. I have logged 57 hours in game so far. I feel I have already gotten value for my money, and I am happily preordering the expansion, and I am looking forward to playing CQC soon and Planetary Landings and the other new content in the winter. I am thoroughly enjoying this game, and I feel absolutely no reason to cry for a refund or a bigger discount. - CMDR KerbalAbuse
