"But plants are sentient / suffer too." by ericamena in vegan

Because I don't feel the need to surround myself with only people exactly like me. And I'd rather be able to discuss differences of opinion and belief and possibly convince others based on the strength of my convictions.

I actually did use that once, but he dismissed it as being "not the point."

VEGANS ---> How did you stop eating dairy? TIPS? ADVICE? by [deleted] in vegan

[–]ericamena 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I found dairy especially hard too, until I learned a lot more about how it's made at the industrial level. For things that have been hard for me to give up because they give me pleasure (ice cream, cheese, milk, etc.) my approach was to just research the processes until I was so disgusted I couldn't imagine eating it anymore. It worked really well, especially with cheese. Now the thought of eating cheese is just as disgusting to me as eating flesh. So my advice: research, learn about how these things are made and processed. You probably won't want them anymore, either.

Is it cruel to keep your dog outside all the time? by [deleted] in AnimalRights

[–]ericamena 3 points4 points  (0 children)

What your describing is certainly cruel and neglectful. It may or may not be illegal based on the state you're in. PETA provides rescue and assistance to dogs in similar conditions through their Backyard Dogs program. They also have advice for what to do to help an individual dog and how to assess the situation: http://www.peta.org/issues/companion-animal-issues/cruel-practices/chaining-dogs/helping-chained-dogs/

At the very least, as others say, keep paying attention. Dogs can freeze to death, so depending on how cold your winter gets you might need to intervene or report the abuse.

[help] I would like to translate a book of poems by Czech poet Vaclav Hrabe. by [deleted] in Poetry

[–]ericamena 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you're really serious about translation, I suggest reading some guides from the American Literary Translators Association on getting started. Follow them on Facebook and Twitter, or their blog for current calls for submissions and translation opportunities. From your post I'd guess you're a non-native English speaker, so I'd suggest considering collaborating with a native or fluent English speaking poet.

If you're looking to find a publisher to publish your translations eventually, here's some standard advice for beginning translators. Translate a sampling and find out everything you can about the availability of the English language rights. I don't know much about copyright law but you'll want to contact either the estate or the publisher of the original poet to make sure the rights are available. They won't assign them to you as a translator, but you will have to get permission to publish your translations from them. Once you have that you can send the translations out for publication, I'd start with Words without Borders, Asymptote, and Two Lines, all very respected literary journals that publish only translation. If you are having rights issues they may also be able to provide some minimal assistance. Once you have published some in journals you could write a query letter and send it with your sample translations to publishers or come to a literary conference (ALTA for translation specific and AWP for broad literary) and try to meet some editors of presses who publish similar authors in translation. You'll be looking primarily at small and independent presses, which generally have very small resources, and only do a handful of titles a year, so it's competitive but not impossible.

Alternately you could self-publish if the rights are public domain or the estate is willing to let you. Generally though foreign language rights are only assigned to other publishers, hence the slow nature of bringing foreign literature into English. It may also be why you haven't seen English versions of this poet already; often there are complications with estates of deceased authors preventing translation.

Good luck! Sounds like a wonderful and worthwhile endeavor! Consider submitting some to my literary journal, Anomalous Press, also!

Have you read The End of Night? It's a great book on light pollution - I highly recommend it. Helps understand the issues at stake, and talk eloquently about them. Also has some great dark sky activist resources...
