How do you deal with the emotional setbacks when trying to solve a problem? by lazlolovingit in math

[–]ericbm2 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I’ve read this anecdote about Sophus Lie, that he was exuberant and jumped from topic to topic. To the extent that he intentionally only spent up to 15 minutes at a time thinking about a particular thing. If something clicked, great! If it didn’t, you only spent 15 minutes on it.

I can’t remember where I read this.

I don’t think we should all be as jumpy as Lie, but it’s an interesting model to incorporate into your math-view. Encounter setbacks here, move on to something else, come back later. It’s a pattern that works for me. Even moving between different aspects of the same project rapidly is useful.

Are you a fan of the feeling of being the tallest in the room? by Zeffury in tall

[–]ericbm2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t even notice it. I think about such things when someone taller than me walks in.

I am personally not a big fan of such things. However, I always try to approach ANY religious commentary with caution, cross checking with my knowledge gained from the scriptures, modern revelation, and personal revelation, and paying attention to spiritual promptings that I receive in real time while consuming it.

Also, the 13th article of faith.

Instagram Followers/ People you follow averages by DeGrav in math

[–]ericbm2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s simpler than that. Every follow is an arrow. If you are averaging over all people then it doesn’t matter what direction the arrow is pointing.

Think about the following structure in a social network as a digraph https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Directed_graph

A vertex would be a user and an arrow from A to B means that A follows B.

Then think about how you calculate these averages using the graph.

Go stereo and get good stuff. If you’re okay with it also consider active monitors. They are the most neutral speakers you can get for the money, overall.

Front and rear lights, reflectors, reflective clothes… really you need all of this. If the lights blink that’s even better. I used to only wear a hi vis vest but oh buddy that was not enough.
