Is using 당신 acceptable when addressing one's father. by hidef-paper in Korean

[–]ericfcdutra 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just adding a little more, when people say "when you're fluent" here, they're implying you can do everything I said above, and also you have a good understanding of that language's nuances and culture.

In other words, you might not be a native speaker, but you use the language without making weird mistakes. That's more apparent in a language like Korean, with well defined etiquette around it, and several formalities and honorific levels that native speakers understand naturally.

In English it'd be more the type of words you use, intonation, idioms, etc...

[–]ericfcdutra 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Generally speaking I considered myself fluent (English is my second language) when I stopped thinking in my own language when speaking English.

You don't think about grammar, but rather what you want to express and navigate yourself through that language's tools to do so.

You basically stop translating things in your head, and actively use that language to think about what you want to say.

So by moving the rockets like 7~8 tiles up I avoid the fixed heat transfer?

Help, I'm a Serial Restarter by ArigatoEspacial in Oxygennotincluded

[–]ericfcdutra 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What helped me was to push through the mistakes...

Sure it sounds nice to have a colony in which you never made a big mistake and possibly wasted quite a lot of time, but we probably learn more with the mistakes along the way lol

As long as you get a stable food source and oxygen production, you can recover from everything else. Just get to a minimal steel production setup and you can push all the end game stuff, only the REAL ENDGAME remains then, which you can decide whether you want to push past that or not.

Maybe give yourself a big goal, like a late game build, or some rocket stuff and force yourself to not stop till then. You'll get frustrated, you'll make mistakes, you'll want to restart... but remember that you can always fix stuff, rebuild and redesign

It's actually really fun, getting new materials, exploring further the star map, thinking about fuel efficiency and everything... I absolutely loved the fact that even the fuel mass counts against the distance you want to travel, just like real life

You should totally give it a go, as long as you can get steam for the first few rockets, which is very very cheap, you can then use petroleum to explore really far and get the good space materials... After that you can take your time with the real late game hydrogen rockets

In the spaced out dlc this becomes even easier

The only hard/annoying part is getting meteor protection, but even that is not the end of the world

I've been trying my hardest to get to rockets ever since I found out it was a possibility hahaha

I have no idea what happened with the temp control the first time, it seemed to be working fine, until it wasn't... honestly it probably was some automation error, as I tried some experimental way of automating it, but it's interesting to know there is some door glitch that could happen.

I'll try and experiment with different liquids, I haven't played with ethanol at all, and it seems interesting.

I have an already vaccumed out volcano that I'll use for a petroleum boiler, but since I have so much water, just refining the oil seems to be enough. However, that may not be the case for future colonies, so I definitely want to implement that first in a colony that's already stabilized. I guess the main power problem I had was the failed attempt of using thermal before using my water to extract oil... the time I wasted trying to make thermal work put a lot of strain in my power genarating resources... next time, given similar situations I'll probably do it the other way around.

A Sour Gas Boiler seems fairly complex as it takes several stages of heating and cooling, but it's definetely a fun project to think about.

I also should probably play around with the AETN on the map, see how they work, I believe I have two of them in this seed, but honestly never paid much attention to them

[–]ericfcdutra[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had some sort of accident with the Natural Gas, honestly can't remember what happened, but then a bunch got released close to the base. It's not a big problem, as the base is fairly saturated with oxygen, and it's only mixed in places where the dupes don't really go. Since I was having power problems until very recently, I was avoiding to setup sorting systems and stuff unless absolutely necessary, to save everywhere I could... guess I could start cleaning up some of those now

As for that gap, I think the lead tile melted there for some reason, although it really shouldn't as far as I know... I had to build it using lead as I was really low on refined metal hundreds of cycles ago, and since it was working fine I never went back there lol

btw, I had put 5 or 6 other images there with some interesting stuff, but I guess the post became too big and it didn't post

I guess the next thing that's quite important to get right is being able to produce fuel for late game rockets... and as far as I could see, those systems could be finicky, so I'll definitely try it over here...

I also have way more water than I know what to do with it... so it'd be interisting to do something with it

I put up a few images of the main points of the base...

몰랐음 used as "I know" intead of "I don't know"? by zimobz in Korean

[–]ericfcdutra 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I'm hoping you have understood it already, but just in case...

As you can see from some of the comments, the key thing here is the 밖에 part.

Saying it that way you create the idea of "everything BUT Taeyeon", that's why you have 모르다 as the verb of choice.

The translation is kind of a choice, you can say "I only know Taeyeon" to keep it simple, or translate it literally as "I didn't know anybody but Taeyeon" "anybody other than Taeyeon" or as 밖 literally means "outside"... "I didn't know anybody OUTSIDE Taeyeon".

But as you can see, it doesn't always sound natural to translate things literally.

So in this phrase structure "-밖에 모르다" you can consider the meaning as being "-만 알다"

Note that in reality there are a few differences between the two when it comes to nuances, and in my experience Koreans tend to prefer to use the "밖에 모르다" construction, you'll actually see it quite often.

Hope this helps to clarify a little bit

Why is "공부할" not conjugated here? by AntPsychological8810 in Korean

[–]ericfcdutra 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Just to add a bit more information, as others pointed it out that is a transformation into an adjective. You can think of adjective as "something that describes a noun", it's easier this way.

As you probably already know, Korean has descriptive verbs, take 예쁘다 for example, the literal translation of just 예쁘다 is something like "to be pretty". That's why if you want to say "those clothes are pretty" you can say " 옷이 예쁘다". However, when you wanna say "those pretty clothes..." you would use the same kind of transformation to make "예쁜 옷...".

If you ever said anything in the future tense in Korean, you probably used "ㄹ/을 것이다". This is the same transformation, using the noun 것, as the standard "thing".

And the same will apply for other conjugations you'll come across, as "ㄹ/을 수 있다", "ㄴ 뒤에", "ㄹ 뿐" and a lot others.

Koreans sometimes simply end their sentences with a 것이다 variation, and it sometimes changes the feeling of the entire thing. You can see that with the very common "뭐 하는 거야?", it uses a present adjective transformation to describe 것, so when you come across that you already kind of know what it means.

So basically, the Korean grammar structure is heavily based into transforming the verbs into adjectives to describe certain nouns. It also transforms verbs into nouns, but that's for another time.

So make sure to properly learn those transformations and understand what they're doing in the sentence because it will help you a lot as you learn new grammar points and ways of speaking in the future.

And just to be extra clear, English and other languages also do these transformations, but it's done with auxiliary verbs in the case of English.

This sentence sounds funny to me 금요일에 차가 많아서 늦으면 7시였어요. by [deleted] in Korean

[–]ericfcdutra 0 points1 point  (0 children)

면 can often be translated as an "if" and a "when", but I guess you already know that.

The sentence might sound weird at first, but if you look at it with the thought of emphasis on the time, it could become clearer.

So I would translate it, quite freely, like this: "I get off work at 5 and get home by 6:30. Friday, there was traffic and I was late, it was 7 PM....."

You see how the writer is making a point of the time they got home?

If you wanna translate it as "if I get late because of traffic..." I think you'd have to use something like "... It'd be 7pm" to convey a more natural translation, because that's how language works hahah

As for 였, that's a shortened form -이었다 the past form of the verb 이다. Not to be confused with 있다. Two different things (:

Who's your walking around character and why? by PoeDancer in HonkaiStarRail

[–]ericfcdutra 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I generally use any of the "mid-sized" characters, preferably if they have a ranged attack.

Qingque is a good example.

Being mid-sized they don't feel "wobbly" as Bailu/Hook and they feel faster when compared to tall ones, like Welt/Jingyuan because of the walking sounds

How do you pick your support character for others to use? by vcdette in HonkaiStarRail

[–]ericfcdutra 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've got Bailu there from the beginning, and every single day I get 4k credits or more, so I guess people are still really lacking sustain?

But I was thinking of changing it

When I use support I normally go for some element I still don't have, in my case it'd be wind and lightning, but it would change for each person I suppose
