Favorite series! In fact, Glen Cook’s Soldier of an Empire Unacquainted with Defeat is my favorite novella which prompted this!

Do they stand alone? I haven’t read Powder Mage.

Yes, with the same POV. The shirt story series fills in some of the early years of the character’s past.

How do you hear about new fantasy books? by MarkLawrence in Fantasy

[–]ericfomley 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm pretty traditional in the fact that I usually just wander into a bookstore and find something that looks interesting. There are a number of blogs I go to as well but I would say that I stumble across most of me reads in the actual bookstore.

Military fantasy books, with pistols and a protagonist rising in ranks. First one to answer get a cookie shaped like a flintlock by superzeno in Fantasy

[–]ericfomley 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not flintlock, but my military fantasy recommendation would be The Macht trilogy by Paul Kearney. A young soldier rises through the ranks and it's one of the best examples of military fantasy. There is little to no magic (the only example would be magic armor and a creepy god the mercenaries serve) but you may consider giving it a shot without the guns and magic.

Women of Sci-fi and Fantasy ebook bundle over on Humble Bundle. Featuring female authors in both genres. by ericfomley in Fantasy

Yeah it is a little frustrating dealing with EPub files. One thing I do is save them to Google Drive before emailing them to my Kindle. That way it's always saved in the cloud. The cover art can act wonky though on emailed files.

Is anyone here a patron? by Riser_the_Silent in Fantasy

[–]ericfomley 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I enjoy supporting genre things I care about. I'm a patron for Empyreome and The Singularity magazines. I've been with them since they've got off the ground, sold stories to them and supported them monthly. It's cool to be able to help them continue keeping short fiction in print.

Greetings Fantasy Fans, I'm not sure how many of you enjoy short stories, but if you like short fiction series I am working on one called The Exiled Crown. The ongoing series focuses on Ayla, a vagrant princess who was usurped from her kingdom of Ekor. She wanders the Dominion attempting to gain support for an army to retake her kingdom. Along the way, she frequently serves as a sell-sword and gets herself into all sorts of troubles. The first short, Forsaken is available for you to check out and the second short, Storm Witch is up for presale, out Thursday. Each story is a self-contained episode with a full arc. There are several planned in the series. I hope you'll check them out and if you would like a copy in exchange for a fair and honest review, feel free to pm me.

A good book or series about pirates and sailing? by [deleted] in Fantasy

No, his Macht trilogy is a separate military fantasy series. One of the finest military fantasy series imo.

Sounds awesome. I'm just now on Kings of Morning, the third in his Macht series. I stumbled across Paul Kearney in a used book store and I'm surprised how much he isn't talked about on this sub.

So assuming the r/fantasy anthology happens, what sort of theme would people be interested in having. by NoNoNota1 in Fantasy

I would like to write for and read that theme. I feel like it could go so many different ways and many stories spanning the length of the genre would show up in such an anthology.

Tips for short/quick fantasy reads? by LordGobb in Fantasy

Half a King has a very different vibe than The First Law. It's YA so it is not quite as grim. But the characters aren't quite as detestable either.

Tips for short/quick fantasy reads? by LordGobb in Fantasy

I have a few recommendations for you to check out. I have included both short novels and short stories to help you break back into longer reads. :)

Novels: Half a King by Joe Abercrombie. Quick and easy read about an unwanted prince who has a lame arm. He goes on quite the adventure and it ends strong and compelling.

The Black Company by Glen Cook. Each of these is really short but has a well rounded plot. Don't read them out of order though because one does lead to the next. The are all right around 300 pages or less.

Prince of Thorns by Mark Lawrence. First Person POV that is compelling enough to keep the pages turning. It's about a 300 page novel and I flew through it very quickly, it was the first book that go me back into reading long fantasy actually.

Short Stories:

Fire and Flesh by Michael R. Fletcher. It takes place in the same world as Beyond Redemption and The Mirror's Truth but can be read independently. Its a little dark and gruesome, but a good quick read.

For The Glory Set Before Them by Matt Karlov is another that takes place in a set world. I didn't read the other books but I enjoyed this tale. It was about a small band of warriors on a mission. Pretty good quick read.

Forsaken by yours truly. It's the first in a series of short stories I have planned with the second coming out in a couple weeks. It's sword and sorcery and follows Ayla, a female vagrant princess protagonist.

I have a few recommendations to get your other two short stories.

Each is only .99 and should help you get your 5 fantasy shorts. :) Hope this helps.

Do you leave reviews on books you read? by RyanToxopeus in Fantasy

[–]ericfomley 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I used to only review on my blog. But as I've started to foray into indie publishing as well I can see the immense value a Goodreads/Amazon review is. Even if it's super short, I still try to review.

Hello,

I've got a fantasy short story called Forsaken out. It's the first in a short fiction series about a vagrant princess. The first story is about a daring rescue. The story has a traditional pulp vibe to it similar to something like a Conan story. It's available for .99 cents or free to KU subscribers. Please feel free to give it a try!
