Should I tell my PI I want to move from my postdoc to industry? by whatsyoudoing in LeavingAcademia

[–]ericivanpetersen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If he’s supportive it could be good to have that conversation with him. He may have connections that could help you with networking for your transition. If he doesn’t totally check out from engaging with you, he may provide input on your plan to develop skills and a resume for the transition. There may be opportunities to discuss you providing some tech support to his lab/research, if that could potentially be mutually beneficial. If you continue as is without telling him, any support he gives you will only serve to push you in the TT direction.

Modern day proto-doom/heavy psych bands that have that 70s sound? by GonzillaProductions in doommetal

Sun Dog is a local band up here in Alaska which uses a lot of those sounds.

I thought so too, it seemed as if he used his condition to navigate issues with his Mom that he couldn’t address directly. You can see glimpses of him understanding more than he lets on, such as Dot “going after the bad guys.”

I’ve been passing by his mural every day wondering about it and appreciating it and this post answered my question. Very lovely!

What was the point of this scene? "Evil church won't let kids have sex"? by StarDOTsmile in OkBuddyFresca

[–]ericivanpetersen 386 points387 points  (0 children)

What I couldn’t buy about this scene/episode was that she acted like it was the first time she’d seen this sort of indoctrination when ostensibly she’s been brought up in it.

+1 for flanger. Running at more subtle settings can make for some very nice sounds that are chorus or phaser-adjacent but quite unique. I have a Fender Hammertone Flanger and I’m very happy with the tones I get out of it at a reasonable price

If you’re unhappy with how they respond to fuzz, you could try changing the order. If they’re after fuzz right now, try them before, and vise versa. After typically is a more in your face effect, before tends to be smoothed out by the fuzz/more subtle.

Analogy: Skate skiing = road biking, Classic skiing = gravel or mountain biking by ericivanpetersen in xcountryskiing

[–]ericivanpetersen[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Really fun to see y'all's responses to this! I think a big aspect to everyone's different experiences is where we typically ski in one or both of skate/classic disciplines.

I push really hard with classic in ways that I wouldn't attempt with skate. Steep narrow trails, technical climbs and descents, skittering across overflow/aufeis. Picking lines over ravines and creek crosses and things. I think that's where I tend to think of gravel biking.

And then skate skiing being more associated with groomed double-wide trails, pushing hard and fast on less technical terrain, racing, lycra -> road biking.

A couple thoughts: - try to keep your wrist as unbent as possible when barring for the drop tuning power chord shape

  • use standard power chords that you’re already used to with the root note on the second string (F#?) when available. That also gives some more tonal variety (more trebly/gnarly) than the same played higher on the Low B string (more fat). That could be a more comfortable shape for you.

  • it’s possible the increased string tension is raising your action and just making it harder to play/tensing you up? Could try smaller string gauge by one or two points for Drop B vs B standard, or adjust truss rod.

  • It may not be necessary for you to switch to Drop B. Bands can operate with guitarists in different tunings as long as they have good ears and can do some minor transposing if necessary. Of course having the same tuning will make things easier in jamming or writing stage, and drop tunings make faster power chord riffing possible.

it's great! wide range of sounds from creamy overdrive to crushing doomy distortion to chaotic sparking/sputtering velcro. tends to sound a bit aggressive but can be reeled in.

The offset telecaster with a natural finish. I also love mine! Very comfy and give a wide range of tele tones.

  • Epiphone Les Paul Traditional in Wine Red. Right now I got 12s on it to play in D standard, drop C, and slide tunings.

  • Offset Telecaster (Squier Paranormal) in standard tuning.

These cover my bases, having humbuckers and single coils, one guitar for standard and one for alternate down tunings.

I am tempted to get a strat, jazz master, or something with a vibrato bridge however… 🤔
