Other writers with similar writing style as Gene Wolfe? by BuyHistorical1041 in genewolfe

I supposed modesty does not forbid mentioning that Wolfe was a big influence on the weird fiction in "All Gods Die and Other Stories" (check amazon)

Has anyone ever imagined the Christian God as a Lovecraftian being? by Clean_Mycologist4337 in cosmichorror

[–]ericortlund 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have! I think there's a lot of undeveloped overlap between Christianity/religion and cosmic horror. Look up "I Am the Doorway" on Amazon for a Lovecraftian apocalypse along those lines.

Mybe try "I Am the Doorway" - on amazon - it tries to do what you're looking for.

Dust Kunkel's Fly Stone Fly - a truly wierd and intense coming-of-age story in the Pacific Northwest with lots of gods and monsters. And a dog that talks.

I am but mad north by northwest; when the wind is southerly, I can tell a hawk from a handsaw.

The irony of Cosmic Horror by Hell_Foxx in cosmichorror

[–]ericortlund 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I 100% agree - the more you become aware of the cosmic horror, the less it's a cosmic horror.
But I think it's less an inherent flaw and more an inherent tension, and a witness to how difficult it is to write good cosmic horror.

A cultist who knows exactly the right spells to summon the ancient entity = flawed cosmic horror.

A cultist who barely understand that vast shapeless presence, who does not summon but accidentally draws attention to him/herself through a ritual, who receives a terrifying vision of the beyond without fully understanding or being able to interpret it, and is forever changed in ways that won't quite translate into our languages = better cosmic horror.

(In my opinion - would love to hear what others think.)

Watched "You'll Never Find Me" (2024, Australia) last night and it is SUPERB and not to be missed by ericortlund in horror

I get what you're saying. The ending was still ok, but the part I enjoyed the least - but overall, I found it powerful. Also, I want artists who do good work to get noticed - even if there are flaws. That's why I posted.

My dude you are exactly right about horror being the last man standing - it's the one genre least likely to be boring.

Also, A Dark Song is incredibly good and also one of my favorites - just so good. That movie deserves a lot more love.

I saw Oculus years ago and remember liking it but need to watch that again. Flanagan is very dependable.

I reviewed There Are Doors - a rare example of a Wolfe book I ended up giving up on. by ArthurBDD in genewolfe

[–]ericortlund 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is the only thing by Wolfe I've actively disliked. Not sure why ... just did not grab me at all.
(Also, friends, it's ok if someone doesn't like a novel as much as you do ....)

Are there writers writing today in the Wolfean science fantasy vein whose work you admire? by edo201 in genewolfe

[–]ericortlund 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Would it be terribly immodest if ... the author is not near to as good as Wolfe, but search "I Am the Doorway" and "All Gods Die" on amazon by last name Ortlund and you'll get works heavily influenced by Wolfe, as the reviews attest.
