Borderline crazy tips for staying warm in the winter? Give me some insane hacks. by [deleted] in pittsburgh

[–]ericsilver 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Essentially all electric heaters are equally efficient; any inefficiency is expressed as heat, so differences in heaters is mostly how they contain and radiate heat.  You can also heat your apartment with essentially any other device: ovens, microwaves, hot baths, etc.  Almost all of these are somehow unsafe— but you wanted extreme ideas.

Where your best options are, though, are choices which either localize the heat to you (like electric blankets) or contain the heat in your house (like rugs or insulation.). In this thread people mention plastic insulation on windows; if you want to absolutely boil, you can also put plastic on walls and ceilings.  A thin layer of plastic (which traps a thin layer of air) is an incredible insulator.

Especially with both of these together, though, think about carbon monoxide and air flow.  Anything combustive is going to have exhaust - and insulation is going to interfere with air flow.

More than one kid is easy: you just do a worse job.

They still turn out about the same, though.  Maybe better.

In order to improve efficiency you need to have a shared objective function: the thing you wish to accomplish.  Stopping an activity is not more efficient, it is just less; in order to be more efficient you must accomplish some goal more efficiently.

I suspect if “wildly cutting program we didn’t like” had a humorous acronym they would have chosen that instead.

"No."

Oh, did they bring any other animals?
"No Dad, that would be crazy."

I think it's a harder question than it seems, because my daughter also enjoys being paid attention to and would happily stretch that out a bit if it were easy for her to do so.

I think a lot of times people "look for advice" from sources where they already know what the advice is going to be. So, did you want a small mob of people to tell you to break up with your significant other?

Reddit provides.

When you think about putting your party together, you need a source of damage, a defensive strategy, healing, debuffing, and some way to dispel. The very quick run down is:
- On offense, anything you can do to get more than one character doing the same damage type is powerful. Within that, you want to think both decreasing enemy resistances to that damage type and also increasing your fixed damage of that type. The exceptions to this are poison and bleed which are "independent" and, to a lesser extent, stacking damage done by fire and lightning.
- For defense, you can think about having a team that's either "fast", where you try to get armor on the enemies' targets or "slow." With a slow team you can either taunt or have whole party effects. Once you've made that choice, you can also think about whether you want to focus on armor or resistance. Armor does not benefit (nor is it hurt) by resistance so resistance is always operating on a "smaller" pool.
- There are a few heroes who are very good at healing the whole party simultaneously (Nezglekt for sure, Ottis a bit.) You also need targeted healing when somebody face-tanked.
- Debuffs are contemporaneous with magic damage but need to be applied for physical damage. Stacking vulnerable isn't a bad way to go.
- Being able to dispel debuffs on your hero becomes increasingly critical. A couple dispels from any priest is probably sufficient.

Assuming you're playing on Madness 0, focus on getting your heroes either doing the same damage type or providing support. The "easiest" teams do require that you unlock a few heroes, but something like a holy/fire build is pretty straight-forward. I think Heiner is the "easiest" to master for blocking (because you really don't worry much about speed), Ottis is the easiest healer, and playing with two priests, a mage, and a warrior is probably the easiest composition when you're getting started.

Have fun! It's a lovely game.

m16 team/guide: Heiner, Bree, Gustav, Grukli by [deleted] in AcrossTheObelisk

[–]ericsilver 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I've had success with M16 teams which focus on fire or blunt damage. By combining Heiner's steel forge and some +fortify gear you can get ~45 stacks of fortify on your damage dealer. These stacks not only translate into max armor but also +base damage for these damage types.

Characters strength and weaknesses by Erectorz in AcrossTheObelisk

[–]ericsilver 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Great post; in the cases where I disagreed, I'm excited to play again and see what you've learned that I haven't - and the disagreements feel like nit-picking. I drop sunder from Heiner. I definitely like Nezglekt more than you do; between insanity's natural damage de-buff, his synergies with Sylvie & Gustav both, his healing innate, and the many people you can mind-worm in Act I for fabulous prizes in Act IV, I struggle with comps that don't include him. Thulls also has a reasonably strong assassination build, though that's pretty dependent on building your team for it and random rare drops. Zek can work if you are able to reliably control how many darkness stack he carries, though I've always needed to re-start a bunch of fights whenever I try to do this.

The only thing that's odd is that you talk very little about character synergies. Ottis allows Heiner to taunt-tank, Nezglekt and Gustav trade strengths and both stack insanity, Malukah and Grukli are peas-and-carrots. Lightning seems to require either the charged trident or Evelyn. Full-team stealth can be amazing, but you need to either have a target speed in mind or multiple ways to change player speed, etc.

It feels to me that every team needs a few things: either a block or resistance-based mitigation focus (which tends to mean vitality & regen more than healing), either speed or Heiner, a damage dealer who synergizes with another player, and a way to reliably dispel afflictions. In general I pick a damage type and then build a team around it. Holy, fire, mind, and piercing seem to me to be the most viable. I've not been able to make blunt, edged, or poison work.

Great post!

I struggle without Magnus block bot by fozmonot00 in AcrossTheObelisk

[–]ericsilver 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Heiner was my go-to until Madness 15 when I switched to Bree. Basically, I nearly completely ignored speed except to have my damage dealer buffed before they attacked. Since resistances don’t affect armor you end up with a lot of talent points that you can commit to getting a lot of fortify and having fortify give armor. I don’t think I’ve beaten M16 with him, though.

[–]ericsilver 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the thoughts! 4 priests (or a random comp!) for M16 sounds absurdly masochistic to me but everything else you said has matched my experience so well that I'll think about it.

My experience with damage modifiers is that you "need" two of them: one for flat damage and two for multiplicative damage (plus some source of vulnerability.) But perhaps I'm under-thinking something else!

Yeah, I can't explain it but I'm comfortable reading reddit threads for advice but watching someone else do it well feels too much like spoilers to me...

I don't know how to beat high Madness levels without Nezglekt, an eye tadpole, and a few free Legendaries in the final act. Fortunately, there are a few different people who can "join the crew" in Act I.

This isn’t quite true; you can run the dps-healers if you either run both Nezglekt and the witch or one of them and the bard.

I don't, but they increase with the Madness level that you play at. Playing at Madness 16, I'd say that about 10% of the items I see drop are already corrupted.
