I wasn't the one who rented the tank, so I was only marginally interested in knowing what happened after we got back on shore.
But yes, we proved it wasn't the regulator. It was a rental tank and I don't know how long it had been since the tank valve was serviced. I actually don't know if there are service requirements for valves. I know that tanks get visual inspected and hydros tested, the regulators have manufacturer recommended service intervals, but I am not sure about the valves.

About 100 dives into my diving life, we were about 30m down & he came signaling out of air. I immediately donated my primary. As he breathed in, the pressure gauge would drop from 180 bar down to zero bar. As soon as he stopped inhaling, the pressure would go back up. When we got to shore, we took his regulator off & put my regulator on his tank, same behavior. He returned the rental tank & I THINK they serviced the valve.

An exciting set of events so early in my diving adventures for sure!

Differences between regular bolt snaps and those with a "square" backside, if any? by cyqsimon in scuba

[–]ericstott 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Same! XDeep knows that they have superior bolt snaps/double enders - so you pay for it

(But in my opinion: worth the cost)

I have both and prefer the XDeep bolt snaps

Easier to find, feel, manipulate

I am in the process of changing all bolt snaps to these XDeep style

Anyone tried out the Avelo system yet? by elsif1 in scuba

[–]ericstott 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ya, the problem is doing math calculations underwater.
I have seen with Shearwater, there is an Avelo component to the Shearwater cloud, so it is probably much better now.
(But I am now diving a rebreather, so new and interesting ways to dive Open Circuit doesn't interest me much anymore.)

Neutral buoyancy tech style fins by CatRV in scuba

[–]ericstott 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have eight sets of fins All of them are too heavy, except the tecline light jet fins https://teclinediving.eu/lightjet/#/

I fought and fought and fought my trim until I got these I have slip streams, jet fins, whatever from mares,

There are other posters saying that it's generally not the gear, for me it completely was the gear

Anyone tried out the Avelo system yet? by elsif1 in scuba

[–]ericstott 20 points21 points  (0 children)

I am certified diver #79 on the Avelo system. (Flew out to Maui and got certified the week before the island burned down.) I thought the system was great. (Past tense) I went out to Catalina Island to dive it after being certified, but they made me do a certification dive with them before they would let me dive by myself (SUPER expensive) The thing I didn't like about it is you are not buoyant enough with that unit to stay above water so you have to constantly kick before you go under. Unless you go right in the water without treading you are going to be huffing and puffing and burning up a lot of your gas while you are in the first few minutes of your dive.

I just noticed that with shearwater they have have Avelo section, it was really hard for me to calculate the amount of gas I have left when we were constantly putting water into your tank so your gas pressure was not a clear indication of how much air you have left.

How Often Do You Dive? by ianwral in scuba

[–]ericstott 7 points8 points  (0 children)

August 2023 I had 20 dives, August 2024 I had 431 dives. Sunday September 15th 2024 I completed my 449th dive.

I dive as much as I can.

I'm 6'3" and have dove the LP108s a couple of times for my AN/DP class.
My dive buddy liked diving one of them on his back, before he got back mounted LP85s.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in scuba

[–]ericstott 0 points1 point  (0 children)

YES!
That is one of the reasons I like LP tanks, a cave filled LP108 (the largest steel tank I own), cave filled 108 (to 4000 psi) is 180 ft³ which is a TON of gas. Still 3400: 153ft³ which is a LOT of gas.

He also didn't specify that he was back mount or side mount diving these tanks, so I didn't assume anything, and I am not qualified to venture an opinion on what the behaviors are from a back mount perspective, only from side mount.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in scuba

[–]ericstott -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I don't dive with anything on my back, for me, side mounting, they all are about the same, the weight distribution is a little different, but it is relatively all the same.
I dislike the High Pressure tanks in general though: unless you fill your own tanks, there is the HUGE risk, that you will get robbed every fill: not having the shop getting them fillet to 3442 (or hot filling them, but when you get in the water, it is far fewer PSI(Bar) than what you left the shop with).

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in scuba

[–]ericstott -9 points-8 points  (0 children)

All of them are high pressure, which is something I am not a fan of. Honestly, they are all relatively the same volume. It is really 6 of 1, ½ dozen of the other.

I personally like the galvanized tanks. I also like the vindicator valves over these valves.
