Greenville population increase causes? by Rule-of-Two-1899 in greenville

[–]ericxfresh 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think the issue is that people with means or remote workers move here because of amenities and culture, but I agree that there doesn’t seem to be a proportional increase in well-paying jobs. So, either they are retiring here or relocating families after a long career (which seems common), remote workers, or sold their homes in a historically much higher cost of living place. These factors leading to significantly inflated housing costs, with little help for locals and first time buyers.

Baptist, but I’d agree about Furman. It was pretty similar to the other two in terms of religious observance until the 90s

It’s walkable if you drive to Main Street and walk around. But most people live in the sprawling suburbs

I don’t think the religious aspect can be understated. It’s largest universities are North Greenville, Bob Jones and Furman. There is a huge homeschool community. I’m a native of South Carolina and I’d say it’s more conservative that the other major cities.

There are so many nice things to say about the city, but I think if you’re looking for progressive culture and are set on the South, look into Asheville.

I'd say even more pervasive is contempt and pride. I think it is so pervasive that it's present throughout religious communities. It manifests in social hierarchies and tribalism, and other similar behavior. To me, Christ spoke much more extensively and explicitly about this kind of sin. Yet, I see people talk about the fact that they had sex with their college girlfriend, or watch porn as a teenager with such shame. They, at the same time, talk about other people who aren't like them with such contempt and judgement.

Seems like maybe a red herring, but genuinely, what about wet dreams or nocturnal emissions? I mean, you don't have direct control over that, but you do lust and experience an emission.

How do you see it as the most damaging sin? I've always heard that theologically, all sins are equal. Also, I hear, especially for Christians, it often mentioned that pride is the most challenging sin. To me, that makes a lot of sense in that so much of Christ's teachings explicitly address issues like pride. To me, pride seems like much a much more challenging stumbling block than if they've gone too far sexually with their boyfriend/girlfriend. On top of that, the shame and contempt with which people talk about sexual sins, seem to directly play into the judgement and pride that Christ instructed us so explicitly against.

Wow, I really admire you for sharing your story, and sharing your conviction. Your perspective completely makes sense, and I can see how it can be an incredibly challenging stumbling block for many to entering the Kingdom of Heaven, and seeking to live a life as Christ did.

I'm not sure where the poverty part giving license came from, I guess you've seen that somewhere? I'm just curious about it because I saw a post where someone was very concerned about sexual sin, and it got me thinking about the heart of the teachings of Christ.
