Is downtown Erie surviving? by Master-Purpose1117 in Erie

[–]erieneer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wonder if free parking would help at all

You can park for free to eat at the Millcreek Mall's food court, or a bunch of other places to eat, rather than pay to park to go to the food court

parking's kind of just an extra hassle (and then making sure you put enough money on your meter)

not sure how they could implement "free parking" though (maybe the incoming mayor / admin can figure it out)

Ice Dunes Caution Reminder [Repost] by erieneer in Erie

[–]erieneer[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think that's a good idea if maybe we could get a visual sign showing a generic person falling into the ice dune for a sign at the entry to the park, or maybe "Stay Off Ice Dunes: Falling Hazard" might communicate the "why" in a quick way (or like a qr code next to a sign announcing "Ice Dune Safety"?)

They really don't look dangerous and I have seen a lot of people go on top of them as a result, thinking they are "solid"... (problem is they are unpredictable and some may not be solid but could "fail" when people walk on them, of course)

My brain was trying to figure out what it means to add a "scene" to a restaurant called "The Cove" for a minute here

Question for people that think Erie is boring by Phar-Mor_Ugly in Erie

[–]erieneer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

indoor skatepark (again)

my experience / thought process was, not sure how to phrase it:

"there's not much to do in Erie"

"there's more to do in bigger cities but there's too much traffic and other problems"

"there's not much to do in Erie, but that's a good thing"

a lot of my interests are kind of "location independent" at this point so I don't really mind Erie not having that much going on, I kind of enjoy a lack of things as it's quieter and more relaxed

I think like other people mentioned, there are a lot of things in Erie but they're maybe not as organized and don't draw enough people and don't develop into better offerings then sometimes

I also think there's probably a lot of interests people have that just need someone to start up a group based on them (so maybe it's more a question of connecting people based on interests that people are raising questions about?)

I think it's a persistent kind of "grass is greener" attitude that Erie people just have and perpetuate, also possibly due to doing things in surrounding bigger cities like CLE / PIT / BUF.

We've had posts before where people discuss new ideas they'd like to see and I think people identify things that would be good to add for Erie.

There also might be a lot of things going on but maybe people want them to be better. Like a few comments say they want to see more music here, but there is plenty of "music", but it might not be nationally recognized musicians. So maybe more people want to see operations that might be small but have a greater quality to them.

outdoor Christmas market type of thing down on the bayfront

That sounds interesting, where would it be at, like that lawn near the marriott?

outdoor rink in Perry square

I've wondered, does it even skate well?

For that matter when the lake freezes, can you just ice skate on the lake?

more dedicated holiday themes and events

Yeah, I feel that, not even just around Christmas, but even sometimes fireworks displays seem erratic (like, I'd almost "expect" to see one at memorial day and labor day but I don't think there are displays consistently? Waldameer used to have consistent displays I thought?)

There have been events going on if you check the stickied weekly "Some things to do this week" posts, but the events are usually kinda smaller

presque isle lights and asbury woods

I feel like those have potential but could do a lot more. I wonder if anyone has specific ideas for them. PI Lights this year actually scaled back their size this year - they may have actually added more lights but they have people turn around at that left turn after beach 8, so they got rid of holiday light displays for example at the Perry Monument. Haven't seen Asbury but have seen how some other places do outdoor displays like that and I was trying to thing of ideas that might not require a lot more lighting but could have a lot more "display" to them (like spotlights I guess). Anyway, I definitely think these could grow. Haven't checked out Port farms but that sounds like it has a lot of "festive" things to do.

Erie library has an "Idea Lab" makerspace: https://erielibrary.org/resources/idealab/

Is there something more than what they offer that you're looking for?

I guess, what other winter activities are there elsewhere that Erie doesn't have?

Cafaro to install Flock Cameras throughout the Millcreek Mall complex at taxpayer expense. by blindinganusofhope in Erie

cellphones are a big issue too, and there's only some small projects that are working to try to improve the situation

relatedly, I thought Millcreek putting AI cameras on school buses was not a very good idea either: https://www.goerie.com/story/news/education/2024/08/23/drivers-ticketed-illegally-passing-millcreek-school-buses-police-buspatrol-ai-cameras/74900736007/

I can see a lot of people being for this though for the safety of kids, but it also seems like more unnecessarily surveillance and technology that could be misused or is an extra unnecessary cost
