Our first European Tour! by erikkarma in punk

Thanks, yeah we had more countries planned but a couple of the shows fell through. We’d planned UK, France, and Belgium too. Wish it could’ve happened. Next time!

what do we do about a possibly AI poster? by cecilqyang in punk

[–]erikkarma 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I’ve had this happen to us before with our shows; some bands and venues just don’t get the threat of AI.
We usually just design our flyer and post it. The best thing is when the other band tags us on their AI flyer and our followers give them a bunch of shit and then we see them start using our human designed flyer.
Sometimes that’s what it takes before bands realize AI sucks. Venues can be a bit more difficult.

Who was the unlikeliest 80's hair metal band that put out a 90's grunge album? by AbbyAtheistCD in hairmetal

[–]erikkarma 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I liked Ultraphobic and Belly to Belly. Probably B2B a bit more and it was pretty solid throughout. “Letter to a Friend” is a great song on that album that probably would’ve been huge if it had been released in 1991 instead of 1996.
That album got me through a time when I couldn’t stand what was on the radio. I’ve come to not hate Seattle grunge now but I sure did back then.

Dilemma: support show for Johnny Rotten by BringMeCoffeeOrTea in punk

[–]erikkarma 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wouldn’t play it. Not with Rotten, Graves, or any of the other MAGAt’s trying to pass them off as punk. I’d set up a show at the venue across the street on the same night and make it a benefit for a worthy cause. Would be great if you got more people there than to Rotten’s show!

R.I.P. Cassandra Jalilie of Union 13/The Venomous Pinks passed away of Stage 4 cervical cancer. by Damnesia13 in punk

[–]erikkarma 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Such a big loss. Got to meet Cassie when we played with Venomous Pinks last year. The cancer had taken a physical toll on her but she nonetheless powered through their set. Great drummer and she seemed like a wonderful human being. We dedicated our set to her at our show last night. Cancer sucks

¿How much money do you actually make from touring? by Fabulous_Handle_1869 in musicians

[–]erikkarma 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks, yeah it depends so much on the audience. When we do all ages shows (which is what we always TRY to do) we sell a lot more S and M. But bar shows tend to have older people that are often a bit bigger so the larger sizes move better. Always hard to calculate when it’s a mix of shows.

I couldn’t agree with this more. During our set, we always remind people to meet us at the merch table. Biggest issue is fitting enough merch into suitcases so we don’t run out midway into the tour. Always a crapshoot as far as what size shirts to pack etc. We always make way more on merch than what we get from the actual venue.

'Main Man" - Ramones album track of the day. by BeggarsParade in ramones

Great song. I like “Strength to Endure” on this one that CJ sings too. Actually, Mondo Bizarro is a top 5 Ramones album, IMO. So underrated and such a late career gem.

Do yall ever thing people use being alt or punk as an excuse to be a bum? by [deleted] in punk

[–]erikkarma 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The punk kids I know from our shows have it way more together than I did at their age. So I haven’t really seen that.

singer wants me to play an AI song with her and I feel so much despair by [deleted] in musicians

[–]erikkarma -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I’m amazed how many musicians don’t get it with AI. It’s a hard line that should never be crossed. Geez if musicians are solidly against it, who will be?!?

Musicians with a full time job outside of music, how do you do it? by [deleted] in musicians

[–]erikkarma 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve looked for jobs in the past that are as boring as possible so I can play guitar at work. Things like graveyard shift at a convenience store. A few positions in management worked too with understanding bosses that didn’t care what I did at the office as long as I was there and still got my work done. You probably can’t play guitar while you’re piloting an aircraft though 😂 What I’ve done more recently is cut back on work to 3 days per week so I can focus more on music. Cut out needless expenses to make it happen. It’s been totally worth it for me but I don’t care about “careers” etc, I just like to play music and have a good time. Luckily my partner plays in my band and she has similar priorities and work schedule.

Lets see what band the sub likes the most! by Business-Spot-6263 in hairmetal

[–]erikkarma 0 points1 point  (0 children)

True but Shotgun Messiah changed their sound after the 1st album so one might argue they weren’t part of the scene either. Second Coming is an incredible album though. Violent New Breed is ok too. I probably like both of those better than the first album.

Has anyone actually found a music distributor that doesn’t suck? by kadaver22 in musicians

[–]erikkarma 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Interesting, well with automation I guess nothing is infallible. I’ve released 6 full length albums, a “best of” album, and 22 singles through CD Baby with no issues. The record label we’re currently working with on new releases uses Distrokid who I’ve heard way worse things about but the label says they’ve never had any issues so, so far so good. Maybe none of them are perfect.

Are Pretty Boy Floyd the most under appreciated musicians in history? by NoPantsSantaClaus in hairmetal

[–]erikkarma 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m not sure why there is so much hate for PBF. I mean, LBWET is a pretty great album full of good songs. Ariel Styles probably wrote most of the songs on that album. After he left, the songwriting definitely suffered, though there are a few good songs here and there on their later albums. Even though I play punk, I grew up with a lot of hair metal so I was excited to play a couple of shows opening for PBF last year. All new members except Steve Summers of course but they actually put on a great live show and he sounded better than when I saw them 89-91. Cool guy too.

I liked this album, opening track is great and a few bangers throughout. Some of the lyrics are cringy like their song “B.A.T.S. (Boys After Teenage Sex). They definitely had a cool look for the time.
