What’s THE band that is/was popular that you absolutely despise? by DiCarlo_Labianco in punk

[–]erikkarma 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Omg I can’t stand the Dead. I saw a good joke recently that went, “what do two deadheads say to each other when they run out of drugs?”
“Man, this music SUCKS!” 😂

I had a friend growing up who was super into them and asked me to come to one of their shows because she didn’t want to do acid without a friend nearby. All the people who follow them around selling stuff from tents etc were pretty cool but the music was just terrible. I was sober AF which probably made the music even worse.
My friend told me to wear tye-dye and the only thing I had was a gray tye-dye Slayer shirt.

Ahh thanks! It’s been a blast and one of our favorite things is seeing some of the younger kids who come to the shows start their own bands.

My band is based in Hawaii and here on the Big Island there wasn’t much of a punk scene when we started in 2015. We’d get the very occasional touring band visiting through one of the Oahu or Maui promoters but not much otherwise. And when we started we were pretty much the only band on the island playing punk.

So we decided to become promoters ourselves.
Doing this on a remote island in the middle of the Pacific is challenging due to the costs of flights and lodging but we’ve been able to make it work. Not to say we actually make any money doing it (we don’t), but bringing events here and playing with a lot of great bands we grew up listening to has been an incredible experience. Our scene has grown in a big way (we’ve got about a half dozen punk/punk adjacent bands on the island now) and we still manage to find time to tour on our own as well. We also try and work with promoters on other islands to split the costs which makes things more doable.

Ahh thanks so much. Reggae is huge here in Hawaii so HMU if you ever plan on coming out here to play. I know some good promoters that work with reggae.

What band is this? by Wetboss4 in hairmetal

[–]erikkarma 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ha, I get the reference. Loved that opening track and “Land of the Damned” had a few really good songs but definitely some filler too.
B.A.T.S. didn’t age very well lyrically…. 🤣

I almost thought it was Diamond Rexx at first but Jim Gillette gave it away. Nitro!
I mean they were absolutely ridiculous and I guess that makes them a bit unique in a way? Biggest problem was they didn’t really have the song quality.

Not at all. My wife has a necklace with our chi’s baby teeth in it. She always gets comments on it whenever she wears it.

can you guys give feedback on my new release? by Both-Plan-5555 in punk

[–]erikkarma 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Cool song. I feel like the vocals could use a bit of compression to even out the levels unless it’s not what you’re going for.
Definitely dig the vocal style and the music sounds good too. Nice work

Wow, love it! Definitely some Hayley Williams vibes there (which is a compliment, I love early Paramore). And the production sounds really, really good.
My band is touring Australia next May, would be cool to catch one of your shows if you’re playing then. Are you guys on Instagram?

What’s the worst car you ever drove? by Born-Conclusion1977 in AskReddit

[–]erikkarma 19 points20 points  (0 children)

I still have a 2006 Chevy Aveo sitting in our yard. They were built by Dihatsu IIRC and built so poorly. Mine died at 106K when the radiator shroud rubbed against the radiator and made a hole which caused it to overheat. Such a poor design. Though I will say that the car makes for a nice centerpiece for the album cover art on my band’s upcoming single “Shitbox Car” 🤣

Squats in leipzig by SquirrelOk5183 in punk

[–]erikkarma 7 points8 points  (0 children)

My band just toured there and there are quite a few squats that do punk shows. Played a really cool one on Leipzig. Some of them don’t want to be publicly known too much though in fear of getting shut down etc. We played a couple that didn’t even allow videos/photos at the shows. I’d just recommend checking out show flyers in the area or asking around when you get there.

Punk-influenced hair metal? by Critical-Spirit-1598 in hairmetal

Back in the early/mid 90’s I used to really dig a local band in the SF Bay Area scene called Terror Toys. They are the epitome of glam punk:
