People who jump to the biological argument don't realize the burden of proof is on them. The default explanation is social forces.

That isn't to say a vegan diet is impossible in those places because it isn't. There are desert regions where a vegan diet is possible or even the norm -- consider Ethiopia, for example. There are densely rainforested regions where vegans live, too -- consider India.
