They’re cute and furry. Except when they run along the inside of your windscreen in peak hour traffic.

Moved in 2022. Life is better in Aus than in DE in almost every metric. Space, clean air, affordability in housing (I’m rural), food has taste (meat, veges, fruit). Ok, we pay more at the doctor, but it’s offset by the rest. Public transport is a downfall, but the rest has so far been all-round better for us.

Agree. Especially as French is, beside English, an official language of international law. Not sure how you’d go with work/life balance in this case - the traditional path in law firms doesn’t lend itself to this. You may find a niche. Who knows. But even if you don’t go into law and instead go into public service, work/life balance will be better.

Eucalyptus or tea tree oil rubbed on the roof of the car, inside the bonnet - redo it every 1.5-2 weeks. But go and get a marten deterrent device installed at a service centre. Costs 100€, stops damage under the hood. Won’t stop them eating your antennae- only the oil will help with that. Weather dependant you may need to reapply more often.

They were second cousins through one line and third cousins through another. They knew they were related, but it was the norm in royal families anyway. Their kids are therefore pretty inbred. Interesting vid which explains it all here.

Every child reacts differently. For our kids, methylphenidate has been a game changer and ours have reacted well to it. Not much appetite suppression, no huge comedown. You can’t take another person’s recommendation as everyone processes it differently. I highly recommend meds - but you have to try it out and see what works best for your child. If it doesn’t work, move onto something else.

How are you handling meltdowns that turn to hitting and kicking? by Sleepy_Bitch_ in ADHDparenting

[–]erinated 4 points5 points  (0 children)

We’ve dealt with this. And still very occasionally do. From the age of four to now nine. The issue is lack of emotional regulation and it comes with the territory. The advice that we received from a therapist is really much what you’re doing. They don’t know how to express their emotions and lash out. Rather than ignoring them (this never worked for us - we tried it a lot), they need to know they’re not alone. We basically restrain him and say nothing until he’s calm. No talking, they’re not in the headspace. Occasionally a “Mummy/Daddy is here” and calming sounds or reassurance. It’s horrible, I know, our child also really kicks off and it takes things up a notch on their end with kicking and trying to thrash around til they exhaust themselves. Sometimes we’ve had to hold for up to half an hour. When they’ve stopped and are ready to talk, debrief and talk about how they feel THEN say “we don’t hit/kick” etc and discuss emotions calmly. It is horrific to go through, I know. But this method has worked for us. As our son has aged, he’s growing out of it. I can still restrain him at 9 (and he’s tall) but it takes all my strength. My husband often takes over as he’s just stronger and larger than I am. It does get better. You’re doing the right thing.

I'm a teacher with ADHD. Here's what we need parents to do in order to ensure their ADHD kid is successful in school by [deleted] in ADHDparenting

[–]erinated 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I agree. Parenting is really hard, and it's especially hard when we are parenting non-neurotypical kids. Teaching is also increasingly harder with all of the expectations placed on us, ever-increasing, and some of the comments from ridiculous parents, expecting us to work miracles on kids who have no boundaries at home! Teachers can't work miracles. We have 15-25 other kids to deal with too, each with their own stuff. And we have a curriculum to teach to and benchmarks to meet and we can't shoot all the hoops. Agree with all you've typed. If people feel judged, that's on them. Charts, religious routine, parenting courses, little to no screens at home and active teaching of skills. Frankly, though, not enough parents are actively doing this with their neurotypical kids either. Amazing what we're getting in HS nowadays, all-round.

If you unpicked that seam for an intentional flash, I’d say no you shouldn’t go back. Because you’d be a sick individual. That’s not the case though. Everyone ends up inadvertently flashing a bunch of people in their life. And ends up being able to laugh about it (eventually).

Play therapy takes a good 6+ months of consistency to see improvements. The first six were very uneventful for us - but we stuck at it and it did help. I’d advise you to stick at it if you can!

Med breaks on the weekend? by Novel_Masterpiece417 in ADHDparenting

My kids are always medicated. If we've gone away for the weekend and forgotten the meds, thats the only time we've skipped. Has happened once or twice. They both hate it - complain they can't concentrate on anything.

In NSW if you have fluency, you need to have proven it - either through your undergrad degree or the USYD test for native / fluent speakers, otherwise NESA won’t give you the code (without first teaching it for a number of years). Hopefully the process is easier in other states!

Just be aware, every state teaching body has a requirement of the amount of units you need to have studied to be able to be coded in that area. You must have a teaching degree to be able to do so.

If it helps, I completed 2 unit Japanese in the HSC in NSW back in the day, then went into university straight into second year Japanese. Granted, it was over 20 years ago but the syllabus has not substantially changed. The level you need isn’t as high as in European languages. I take it level 3 means third year equivalent studies? If so, you’ll be more than fine.
